Well here we are again..

Another week, another inductee to announce and we couldn't be prouder..

Joining the 2026 Class is local tenor Louis Gomila!

We stumbled upon Mr Gomila's biography after reading a wonderful article on him penned by local journalist Alice Mascarenhas. We learnt a lot and his biography really wowed us to say the least.. We proceeded to speak to his nephew and fellow Inductee Joseph Michael Gomila and without hesitation he decided to accept the honour on behalf of his family.

BIOGRAPHY


In 1940 Louis was evacuated to London when he was 16. He used to sing at concerts organised by the evacuees. He was spotted by Miss ME Whittehorne of the British Council. Although he wanted to be a draughtsman, he was persuaded to become a singer.

By 1945 he had met and befriended Mr and Dr Lloyd Webber, parents of the now famous Andrew and Julian. He studied music under Mrs Jean Lloyd Webber who presented him for his ABRSM exams, and singing under one of Britain’s most accomplished vocalists, Professor Piccaver.

His break came in 1946. Louis, aged 22, was awarded a British Council scholarship.

He continued his studies full time under Professor Piccaver. Louis sang in a Celebrity Concert in Dewsbury Town Hall, organised by the Bakers’ Association in aid of the Infirmary Cot Fund Effort.

The accompanist was Bessie Brearley ARCO LRAM. The singers were hailed as stars from the London Opera which included soprano Phyllis Brooks (Carl Rosa Opera Company), contralto Winefried Ingham (Glyndebourne Festival) and bass Frederick de Zsolnay (Vienna Opera Company and Salzburg Festival).

Louis is reputed to have made his first professional appearance in Great Britain at this concert. He appeared together with Iris Barnes at the 1947 Congress Annual Dinner of the Incorporated Association of Organists, under the presidency of Dr Ernest Bullock, celebrated composer, organist and teacher. One of the menu cards has a dedication and is signed by William Lloyd Webber with whom Louis had developed a friendship. Later this year he was featured in the Radio Times singing with “Fredric Cooper and his Tipica Orchestra” for the BBC Home Service. He sang on various occasions on this show.

In 1948 Louis performed at a British Council concert given by British Council Scholars. He is accompanied by Dr WS Lloyd Webber. Later that month he sang at the Hippodrome Theatre, Lewisham. Jean and William (Lloyd Webber) sent him a telegram expressing their best wishes.

His singing took him to Plymouth where he was guest artist together with the great British oboist Léon Jean Goossens CBE, FRCM. The Western Morning News describe his singing as “...displaying a clarity of diction and elasticity of tone that shows he is well on his way to operatic stardom…”

By now he had joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company. With this company he toured throughout Britain.

They gave a concert at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in aid of the Friends of France Hospitality Fund.

On his visit to Gibraltar that year, Agrupacion Artistica Calpense announced rehearsals for two concerts to be held as a tribute to Louis, taking advantage of his presence in Gib. The concert was advertised in bold posters featuring Louis as the lead singer in the Zarzuela, “La Leyenda del Monje”.

Being a one act work, this would be performed during the first half of the concert with the second part dedicated to presenting Louis to the local audience performing a selection of songs and arias. The posters and programs herald it as a Great Artistic Event. One review claims that “... Mr Gomila has a voice of great range and quality which will place him among the greatest of world tenors when it reaches full maturity...”

When he appeared on stage after his introduction he received a tumultuous ovation. The concert was extremely successful with encores on both nights. During an interview he intimated that he would love to sing La Boheme.

By now he was touring with the Carl Rosa Opera Company in the UK and had a gig in Liverpool on his return. The program would include La Boheme, Madame Butterfly; where he would play Goro, and The Barber of Seville. The tour also took him to King’s Theatre in Hammersmith. In addition to his role in Madame Butterfly, Louis is programmed as Gaston in La Traviata and Ruiz in Il Trovatore. All these productions took place in the space of a week. The Sheffield Telegraph mentions his role in Madame Butterfly as noteworthy.

However, in Il Trovatore he is named as Louis Caetano, having taken his father’s name and his mother’s maiden surname. He is also depicted as Jose Caetano in Hull, in the Company’s production of Traviata.

In addition to these concerts Louis sang at other nearby venues. Together with the lead soprano of Madame Butterfly, Korina Hellas, he sang at the Victoria Hall, Sheffield at a farewell service for the Methodist minister.

At the beginning of 1949 Louis had a two week stint at the Theatre Royal, Hanley in Madame Butterfly.

Later, 1949 finds Louis studying at the Florence Conservatory, Italy under the direction of baritone Titta Ruffo, known as “la voce del leone” and Raul Frazzi. Frazzi taught the likes of Bechi, Panerai and Mario Del Monaco. It was Del Monaco, with whom Louis had developed a close friendship during Mario’s stay in
London, who encouraged Louis to go to Florence. Louis also became friends with Frazzi who became his mentor. During his time in Florence he sang, amongst other venues, at the Societa del Casino Borghese, the cultural centre founded by Prince Poniatowski. Louis had also had successes at other venues in Florence.

His studies in Florence were made possible through the generosity of Mrs Victoria Mackintosh.

After his six month stay he returned to Gibraltar. Before returning to Gibraltar he had signed a contract with Luigi Pailli for a debut in Rome.

Louis sang in Gibraltar again in 1950. The occasion was the Gibraltar Disaster Appeal Fund, with Horacio Socias pianist, Rita Temple dramatic soprano and virtuoso violinist Rosa Garcia Faria. Later that year Louis would perform at the Gibraltar Festival held at the RAF Hangar. December of that year saw him
performing the role of Roberto in Bohemios with Agrupacion Artistica Calpense.

For the Committee this one was a no brainer and we are honoured to welcome Peter Martinez to the Class of 2026!

Peter Martinez is considered a local guitar legend in Gibraltar, known for his versatile playing style spanning folk, fusion, rock 'n' roll, and fingerstyle acoustic guitar.

Martinez is best known for his pioneering role in exploring Gibraltar's multicultural musical heritage long before it became a popular trend. In 1995, he launched the landmark album Levanter Breeze, a fusion project that blended Moorish, Spanish, and local musical influences. The album—and the music produced during that era—is widely regarded as a classic staple of the Gibraltar musical canon.

Martinez contributed signature guitar sounds to tracks such as "Winston Boyz" on Sista Dee's debut album Wise Up. He has also performed live alongside prominent local figures, contributing guitar work to politically charged and anti-war compositions at events such as Gibraltar's National Day concerts.

David H***e was one of Gibraltar’s most recognized and beloved radio personalities and public figures. Known for his distinctive voice, quick wit, and lifelong commitment to local broadcasting, he became a household name across the Rock.

This induction came from a nomination we received back in October 2025 and after discussion we of course had to accept and from there took it to the H***e Family who have been superb throughout.
