Coromandel Crewel
Coromandel Handmade Crewels and Handlooms
creating heirloom fabrics for future generations
With a client base which includes acclaimed interior designers from House & Garden’s ‘Directory of 100 Leading Designers’, the British Institute of Interior Design and the National Trust, we aim for authenticity in all our fabrics with strong historic references and sensitivity to contemporary tastes in modern British design, whilst maintaining a tangible link with the past. Our unique fabrics are designed to last, often becoming family heirlooms and handed down from generation to generation. They are hand-crafted using only the highest quality materials available and the most durable 2 ply wool to create lengths of crewel embroidery with a timeless appeal. By using ancient methods of production, we are able to help support a continuing cottage industry and sustainable way of life for our artisans in rural Kashmir, whilst minimising our impact on the environment. Our retail customers include a significant number with period properties, many of whom are members of the Historic Houses Association, the Listed property Owners Club and the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings. However, because our fabrics are all 100% natural fibres and entirely handmade, we are also suppliers to an increasing number of architects involved in the design of new builds and eco-homes.

Coromandel Crewel Inigo Slate Grey Crewel lampshade
Inspired by Inigo Jones and Welsh Slate. Strong white embroidery on a grey ground, in the same classic design as our cream and ecru crewels; just as luxurious but far more striking. Bold and contemporary, equally at home in an architect’s dream as a Regency mansion.
Recommended lining: CC28 Slate Handloom. Order a sample - link in About tab

Coromandel Heritage Crewels
Our Multicoloured crewel fabrics feature carefully selected colours and tones in keeping with traditional and period properties. Depending on the use to which they are put, they provide an instantly dramatic focus in any design scheme, however, they will also blend in with existing antique and period furniture, complementing other works of art rather than eclipsing them.

Produced to our own specification in limited batches of only 250m of each design at a time, Coromandel fabrics usually take up to five months to make from commission to completion.
Because we use artisan methods, do not buy ‘off the peg’, and need our designs to be faithfully reproduced; each and every design and colour must be meticulously copied metre by metre to recreate a fabric as close as possible in both pattern and tone to the previous batch.
Inevitably, this is harder, more time consuming than producing an ‘off the peg’ fabric on a machined background and featuring any design and colours available to hand, which is how many fabrics produced only for the retail market can be made more cheaply.
Most crewels are valued according to the overall weight, the quality of work and materials and the number of stitches involved and some of our designs feature nearly 130,000 stitches per metre which can be three or four times as many as those on apparently similar fabrics.
