ποΈMeet the family!
Everyone meet Lily.
Interesting things about Lily are:
π She loves going to concerts.
π She loves going to Glasgow for shopping.
π©· She loves being with her boyfriend William.
Lily also loves to cook and has recently had star of Master Chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen comment on her baking, which to say she was excited about was an understatement π
Everyone say hi Lilyπ

π Recognition Friday! π
Our group of independent cookers have grown today. This time we were making pasta.
A huge shout out to Shane, Rheanna, Lilly and William for making a good choice in deciding to cook instead of ordering out.
Together they learnt to:
πWorked in pairs to make two separate pasta dishes - compromise
πLearnt about timing in cooking - mathematics
π©·Saved money by cooking meals themselves - financial stability.
Well done guys!

π When did this become βnormalβ?
Watching the trailer for Unauthorised Absence really hits home when you work alongside individuals with additional support needs, learning disabilities and their families.
Before judging a parent whose child isn't attending school, we need to ask why.
Why is that child struggling to attend?
Why has a family reached breaking point?
What support was available before it became a crisis?
And why are families so often expected to fight, explain and prove that their child needs something different?
For some children and young people with learning disabilities or additional support needs, the traditional environment simply does not work in the same way. Behaviour is communication. Distress is communication. Refusal can be communication.
That doesn't mean education isn't important of course it is. But education, support and development cannot always come in one standard package.
What concerns us is how easily situations like those portrayed in this programme can become accepted as just part of life for families with additional support needs.
A parent exhausted from fighting for support.
A young person overwhelmed by a system they're expected to fit into.
Families rearranging their entire lives because appropriate support isn't available.
Why is that acceptable? And when did we decide that was βnormalβ?
At A.C.E., we see ability before disability. We believe support should be built around the individual, developing independence, confidence, communication, life skills and meaningful participation at a pace that works for them.
We also believe families deserve to be listened to before they reach crisis point, not simply picked up afterwards.
Programmes like this are incredibly important because they start conversations that can be uncomfortable.
Perhaps the question shouldn't always be:
βWhy won't this person fit into the system?β
Perhaps sometimes we should be asking:
βWhy hasn't the system adapted to meet the person?β
Every individual deserves the opportunity to learn, develop and belong, and every family deserves appropriate support to help make that possible.
Different does not mean less. Support should never be one-size-fits-all.
