This is exactly what makes Narberth special…
Very big round of applause to Narberth Civic Week ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Well…Good morning All! ☀️
Well… after promising everyone I was actually going to have an early night…
I did!
I know… I’m just as surprised as you are! 😂
Now I’ve had a few hours’ sleep (and only reached for my radio three times out of habit 🤦♂️), it’s finally starting to sink in that another Narberth Civic Week has come to an end.
What. A. Week.
Firstly, I just want to say a huge thank you to every single person who came out to support our Carnival yesterday.
Whether you were taking part in the parade, cheering from the roadside, visiting the field, enjoying the live music or simply soaking up the atmosphere around town…
Thank you.
Seeing Narberth absolutely buzzing with people enjoying themselves is exactly why we all volunteer our time.
Yesterday’s carnival was everything we could have hoped for.
The weather behaved itself (which in Wales is basically classed as a miracle! 😂), the crowds were fantastic and the atmosphere throughout the whole town was incredible.
For a few hours yesterday, nobody was asking me where the toilets were, where they could park, why the road was closed or where the nearest cash machine was…
Well…
…actually, thinking about it, they probably still were! 🤣
A massive thank you goes to all of our fantastic entertainment.
The Connections got the party started at the Top of Town, Tom & Abz kept everyone entertained at the Bottom of Town and Show Me Country rounded everything off brilliantly at Narberth RFC.
You were all absolutely fantastic and helped create an atmosphere that people will remember for a long time.
A very special thank you also goes to Sheena, Narberth RFC and everyone at the club for once again welcoming us with open arms and hosting the final evening of Civic Week.
Thank you for keeping us fed, watered and for not banning me after I turned up asking…
“Can I just borrow one more thing?”
…for about the fifteenth time this week! 😂
I’d also like to thank James and the brilliant team at Green Light Traffic Management.
People usually only notice traffic management when something goes wrong…
Thankfully… nothing did.
Your professionalism, planning and calm approach throughout the week made sure thousands of people could enjoy Civic Week safely, and we really are grateful for everything you did.
A huge thank you also goes to the fantastic volunteers from Valero, who gave up their own time to help us yesterday.
Community events simply don’t happen without people like you, and your support certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
To Callum Goldthorpe, thank you for kindly supplying the generator that kept the music playing and the band powered throughout Carnival Day.
Thankfully it kept running…
Unlike me by about six o’clock yesterday afternoon! 😅
I’d also like to say a very special thank you to Emma and the wonderful team at Andrew Price Hairdressing for kindly styling the hair of our Carnival Court before yesterday’s parade.
Every one of the children looked absolutely amazing and you helped them feel like royalty before they proudly went in the parade through Narberth.
Thank you for giving your time and talents to make their day even more special.
And then there’s Jamie King…
Where do I even begin?
Not only did Jamie somehow produce another brilliant Civic Week brochure under some incredibly tight deadlines, but he also spent the entire day as our official photographer, capturing thousands of memories for everyone.
The only downside?
There are now approximately 7,000 photographs of me looking confused, talking into a radio, pointing in random directions or wandering around with a Red Bull wondering what day it is! 📸😂
I’m fairly sure Jamie’s camera has captured most of my of sleep deprivation known to mankind…
…and if there isn’t at least one photograph of me with my eyes shut halfway through a sentence, I’ll be genuinely disappointed! 🤣
Yesterday, thousands of people enjoyed Narberth Civic Week.
The carnival rolled through the streets.
The entertainment was playing.
The road closures worked.
The field was buzzing.
Everything just… happened.
But here’s something a lot of people don’t realise…
There isn’t a team of 50 people hidden away in a control room somewhere.
There isn’t a paid events company.
There isn’t a department at the council organising everything.
There are just…
Six of us.
Yes…
SIX! 😂
Sometimes I think people imagine Civic Week HQ is like NASA, with people staring at giant screens saying…
“We’ve lost a pram pusher on Spring Gardens!”
The reality?
Six volunteers…
A WhatsApp group that never, ever stops.
Several laptops.
A few clipboards.
Enough cable ties and gaffer tape to build a small village…
A frightening amount of Red Bull…
And me walking around saying…
“Has anyone seen the risk assessment?”
Closely followed by…
“No… not THAT risk assessment!” 🤦♂️🤣
To my committee…
Thank you.
Every single one of you gives your time freely because you genuinely care about Narberth.
Over the last seven months we’ve attended countless meetings, chased sponsors, sold advertising, organised entertainment, booked road closures, written risk assessments, dealt with licences, answered hundreds of emails, printed posters, delivered brochures, sorted stalls, moved barriers, chased generators, found extension leads, organised volunteers and solved problems we didn’t even know existed.
And somehow…
We still managed to smile.
Well…
Most of the time! 😂
We’ve had moments where everything has gone perfectly…
…and moments where all six of us have looked at each other thinking…
“Well… that’s not ideal…” 🤣
The funny thing is…
People only see the events.
They don’t see somebody answering Facebook messages at midnight.
They don’t see someone designing posters during their lunch break.
They don’t see committee members delivering letters around town after work.
They don’t see someone taking phone calls whilst trying to eat their tea.
Or me wandering around Narberth muttering to myself because I’m trying to remember whether I’ve actually done what I was supposed to do…
…or whether I’ve just imagined doing it! 😂
This week alone my phone battery has probably been charged more times than my car.
My screen time report should probably be reported to the authorities.
And I’m also fairly certain my wife has forgotten what I actually look like this week! 😂
The committee have also put up with me saying…
“I’ve just got one more thing…”
…roughly 400 times over the last month.
The problem was…
It was never just one more thing.
It was usually another twenty! 🤣
To every single committee member…
Thank you for your patience.
Thank you for your friendship.
Thank you for putting up with my endless lists, colour-coded spreadsheets, random ideas at 11 o’clock at night and my obsession with saying…
“If we’re going to do it… let’s do it properly.”
Volunteering isn’t glamorous.
Nobody sees the late nights.
Nobody sees the stress.
Nobody sees those moments where you have five minutes to solve a problem that could affect an entire event.
People sometimes only notice the one thing that didn’t quite go to plan…
They rarely see the 999 things that did.
And let’s be honest… every year there’s always one! 😂
Every Civic Week seems to come with a professional moaner, a keyboard warrior, or someone who’s able to spot the one tiny thing that wasn’t quite perfect whilst completely missing the thousands of hours of work that went into everything else.
The funny thing is… those same people rarely volunteer, rarely offer to help and somehow always seem to know how they would have done it better afterwards! 🤣
But that’s volunteering.
You quickly learn to smile, have a laugh about it and focus on the thousands of people who came out, enjoyed themselves and simply said…
“Thank you.”
Because those are the people who make every late night, every early morning and every ounce of effort worthwhile.
And despite everything…
I’d happily do it all again.
Because seeing thousands of people enjoying themselves yesterday made every late night worthwhile.
I’d like to finish by thanking the hundreds of people who make Narberth Civic Week what it is.
To our incredible sponsors and advertisers… thank you for believing in us. Without your financial support there simply wouldn’t be a Civic Week. Every advert you buy, every sponsorship you give and every bit of encouragement you offer helps keep this wonderful tradition alive.
To every business in Narberth who decorated their windows, displayed bunting, welcomed visitors and helped create such an incredible atmosphere… thank you. Civic Week belongs to the whole town, and once again you’ve all made Narberth look absolutely fantastic.
I’d also like to leave one thought with those businesses that perhaps didn’t get involved this year.
Every year I hear someone say, “Civic Week doesn’t really benefit my business.”
I’d gently challenge that way of thinking.
Civic Week does bring hundreds maybe thousands of people into Narberth. It showcases our town, our independent businesses and our amazing community. No, not every visitor will walk into every shop, but together we create an atmosphere that people remember and want to return to.
Imagine if every business in Narberth put out a little bunting, decorated their windows, dressed up on Carnival Day or simply found one small way to join in.
Just imagine the atmosphere we could create together
So if you didn’t get involved this year, I’d simply ask you to think about how you might play a small part in 2027. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and it doesn’t have to be over the top. Sometimes the smallest gestures make the biggest difference.
Civic Week isn’t just the committee’s event. It isn’t the Town Council’s event. It’s Narberth’s event.
The more people who get behind it, the stronger this wonderful tradition becomes.
To every venue that hosted an event…
Every entertainer…
Every stallholder…
Every food vendor…
Every volunteer marshal…
Every bucket collector…
Every first aider…
Our emergency services…
Green Light Traffic Management…
Narberth Town Council…
Every community group…
Every organisation…
And every single person who quietly helped behind the scenes without asking for recognition…
Thank you.
There are simply too many people to mention individually, but please know that your contribution has been noticed and genuinely appreciated.
One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that community events don’t happen because one person works hard.
They happen because hundreds of people each do one small thing.
On their own, those things might seem insignificant.
Put them all together…
…and you create something rather special.
To everyone who bought a brochure…
Donated to our bucket collections…
Entered an event…
Shared one of our Facebook posts…
Clapped as the Carnival went past…
Or simply came into town and enjoyed the week…
You have helped keep a tradition alive that has been part of Narberth for generations.
That means more than you’ll ever know.
People often ask me why I do it.
The answer is actually very simple.
Because I love this town.
Although I no longer live in Narberth, it will always be my home.
This town has given me friendships, opportunities and memories that have shaped who I am.
Being Chairman of Narberth Civic Week isn’t about organising events.
It’s about giving something back.
It’s about seeing children wave at the Carnival Court.
It’s about hearing live music echo through the streets.
It’s about seeing families spending time together.
It’s about watching our independent businesses thrive.
It’s about neighbours chatting with neighbours.
It’s about community.
And that’s something worth protecting.
Now…
Before the rumours start…
No… I’m not announcing my retirement! 🤣
I know exactly what’s going to happen…
We’ll get to about September…
My phone will ring…
“Chris… I’ve got an idea for next year…”
I’ll reply…
“No.”
They’ll tell me the idea anyway…
I’ll say…
“That’s actually not a bad idea…”
And before I know it, there’ll be another committee meeting in the diary, another colour-coded spreadsheet on my laptop and another 2,000 WhatsApp messages on my phone.
Apparently that’s just how volunteering works! 😂
Finally…
From the bottom of my heart…
Thank you.
Thank you for your kindness.
Thank you for your support.
Thank you for your patience.
Thank you for believing in Narberth Civic Week.
Most of all…
Thank you for proving once again that when a community comes together, amazing things happen.
The bunting will come down soon.
The notices will be removed.
The radios will be switched off.
The road closure signs will be packed away.
But the memories we’ve made together this week…
…will last a lifetime. ❤️
Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.
Take care of one another.
Keep supporting local.
Keep volunteering.
Keep smiling.
And if my phone rings tomorrow…
I’m pretending I didn’t hear it! 😂
Thank you to everyone—whether you’re from Narberth or further afield—for being part of another unforgettable Civic Week. ❤️
See you all in 2027.
