Protecting livestock today, for everyone's tomorrow ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ„ Protecting livestock today, for everyone's tomorrow.

At MSD Animal Health we are constantly striving to improve the health and welfare of UKโ€™s ruminants by reducing the risk of illness which, in turn, improves our farming customerโ€™s productivity, efficiency and sustainability. We want to support our farming community's efforts to maintain a healthy and productive flock, and maintain exceptional welfare standards. We have a dedicated Ruminants team including, among other disciplines, veterinary surgeons and local account managers who provide our customers technical advice and business support.

The 2026 FlockCheck results are inโ€ฆ and they donโ€™t make for great reading.

The scheme has revealed high levels of exposure to the two main infectious causes of sheep abortion on British farms.

Earlier this year, we hosted a webinar entitled โ€˜Making cryptosporidiosis vaccine work on-farmโ€™.

If you missed it, donโ€™t worry. Weโ€™ve serialised it and will be posting excerpts from the session over the coming weeks.

Full of useful, practical information, the webinar explores the impact of cryptosporidiosis, whatโ€™s driving the problem, and how vaccination and good management can help prevent the condition.

In this first excerpt, Dr Kat Baxter-Smith, Veterinary Advisor for MSD Animal Health, provides an overview of scour and discusses the impact of cryptosporidiosis.

Look out for future instalments which will include vaccination and other approaches to disease prevention, and weโ€™ll hear from one Pembrokeshire farmer and her vet on how they overcame the condition on farm.

โ€˜Vaccinate against pasteurellosisโ€™, farmers urged.

Reported incidents of pasteurellosis have increased more than four-fold in the past five years, rising from 34 cases in 2021 to 120 cases last year [1].

At the same time, vaccine uptake among sheep farmers has fallen from 52% in 2022 to 40% in 2024 [2], despite the condition being one of the most common causes of mortality in sheep of all ages.

Dr Kat Baxter-Smith, MSD Animal Health Veterinary Advisor, described it as a โ€˜devastating conditionโ€™ and is urging farmers to vaccinate.

โ€œVaccination remains the most effective tool available to prevent losses from pasteurellosis,โ€ she said.

โ€œGiven the rising number of cases and the significant economic impact the disease can have on sheep enterprises, farmers should work closely with their vet to ensure appropriate protection is in place before periods of increased risk.โ€

Calving from 7 December?

Start vaccinating against scour on 19 October.

๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ is one of the most common causes of calf scour [1].

But there is a vaccine.

Bovilis Cryptiumยฎ and Bovilisยฎ Rotavecยฎ Corona help protect calves against the four most common scour pathogens โ€“ Rotavirus, Coronavirus, ๐˜Œ. ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช, and ๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ท๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ [2].

If your start date for calving is 7 December, your first dose is due on 19 October โ€“ so the time to take action is now.

Speak to your vet about your vaccination protocols and timings to help protect the next generation of your herd.

Breathe easyโ€ฆ

With MSD Animal Healthโ€™s subsidised BRD screening service.

Run through GB vet practices, our screening service helps you identify exposure to key respiratory pathogens in your herd and formulate a farm-specific prevention plan.

But why does it matter?

Because calves with lung lesions as small as just 1-2cm can have average daily gains 96โ€“138g lower than calves without lesions [1].

Also, BRD affects around 11โ€“16% of calves, and subclinical disease โ€“ where lung damage occurs without obvious signs โ€“ may affect 23โ€“67% [2], meaning your herd could be affected.

So, ask your vet about our subsidised screening service so you, and your calves, can breathe easy!
