This page is for The New Well, Linlithgow - a safe space for the people of Linlithgow and the surrounding areas.

The New Well is a charity registered in Scotland SC050173. The New Well is a community focussed charity based in Linlithgow that grew out of St John's Church in 2020. Our aim is to bring hope and connection through enhancing emotional, financial and spiritual wellbeing and our volunteers come from various local churches. The New Well team provides counselling, runs a Christians Against Poverty Job Club and Money Courses and facilitates Chatty Tables in some local cafes – especially for those who are isolated and lonely. We befriend individuals and, where appropriate, signpost them to further sources of support. We work in partnership with various local statutory and voluntary organisations.

There's something powerful about hearing someone else express what you've been feeling.

Grief can be particularly difficult to put into words. Then a song comes along that captures it so well, it's almost as though someone has reached into your experience and given it a voice.

The grief is still there. But there's comfort in recognising that someone else understands.

And perhaps that helps us carry it a little more softly.

Has a song ever made you feel understood?

Good listening begins with curiosity, not solutions.

Three powerful words:

"Tell me more."

Listening is at the heart of The New Well.

What's something you were absolutely convinced was true as a child, only to discover later that it wasn't?

Some moments seem to find their own soundtrack.
I still remember the music I played after getting my driving licence.
For the first time, I could get in the car on my own, choose where I wanted to go and just drive. I don't remember everything about those first journeys, but I remember the music.
Somehow it became part of the feeling. It sounded like freedom.
Music seems to do that. It attaches itself to particular moments in our lives, often without us realising it's happening.
Then years later a song comes on and suddenly we're back there.
What music takes you somewhere?

Journey through the Wilderness (30-Oct-2026) 07/10/2026

One violin. The sound of a string quartet. All created live.
On Friday 30 October, electric violinist Ben Couper is coming to Linlithgow for Journey through the Wilderness.
Using loop pedals and effects, Ben builds layers of music live in front of the audience - turning a single electric violin into something much bigger.
Across the evening he'll move through classical, folk and popular-inspired music, alongside stories from his own adventures and reflections on some of the challenges of mental ill health.
If you fancy a Friday night that's a little different, we'd love to have you there.

Some things build momentum.

A small creative project can leave us feeling energised. Writing down what we're grateful for can help us notice more of what's good around us. Smiling at a stranger can turn into a friendly exchange. Putting on a song can become singing along, maybe even dancing.

None of these things need to transform our day.

But one good thing can make us a little more open to the next.

Perhaps hope and playfulness can grow in much the same way. We don't always need to manufacture a better mood or make some dramatic change.

We might just need to give the swing a push.

Chatty Tables

It takes time for a stranger to become a familiar face.

Usually it happens by seeing the same people again, learning their names and having another conversation.

That's part of what we value about Chatty Tables.

Every Thursday afternoon, people come together at the Coffee Neuk in Linlithgow for a coffee and a chat. There's no programme to work through and no particular reason you need to come.

It's a place to meet people and get to know them. That's really what Chatty Tables is for.
