🔥 What Is That Smell When I Light My Wood Burner?

The first fires of autumn often bring something unexpected. A smell.

Sometimes it is dusty. Sometimes sooty, damp, smoky or tar-like.

The difficult part is knowing whether it is harmless, temporary, or a sign the stove or chimney needs attention.

Common causes include:
• Dust settling on the stove over summer (often harmless and temporary)
• A strong soot smell, often worse in certain weather
• A damp or musty smell: rain entry, a damaged cowl or cracked flaunching
• A tar or creosote smell from poor combustion
• A smoke smell when no smoke is visible
• A hot metal or burning smell, especially on a new stove
• A smell around the door from a worn rope seal

A brief dusty smell can have a simple explanation. A persistent soot, damp, tar or smoke smell tells a different story, and if a carbon monoxide alarm activates, stop using the appliance and investigate.
