NI Motoring Trivia: Eddie Irvine is the most famous Northern Irish race car driver, and the reason is simple: he’s the only Northern Irish driver ever to become a genuine global Formula One star, with results, controversy, and personality that pushed him into international fame.
Why Eddie Irvine stands above the rest
Formula One success — Irvine raced in F1 from 1993–2002, driving for Jordan, Ferrari, and Jaguar. He won four Grands Prix and scored 26 podiums, an achievement no other Northern Irish driver has matched.
Nearly became World Champion — In 1999, he finished runner-up in the F1 World Drivers’ Championship, just two points behind Mika Häkkinen. This remains the closest any driver from Northern Ireland has ever come to winning the title.
Ferrari era fame — Driving for Ferrari during the Schumacher years made him a household name worldwide.
Media personality — After retiring, Irvine stayed in the public eye through TV appearances, business ventures, and his famously outspoken personality.
