What is an otoscopy, and what can your audiologist see? 👂
An otoscopy is a quick examination of your ear canal and eardrum using a specialised instrument called an otoscope.
During the examination, your audiologist will look for signs of earwax build up, irritation, infection, blockages or changes to the eardrum that may need further attention.
The procedure is usually quick and painless, helping your audiologist better understand your ear health and recommend the next steps if needed.

When hearing becomes more difficult, everyday conversations can take more effort. Constantly trying to follow what’s being said can be tiring, while struggling to hear friends, family or colleagues may sometimes lead people to withdraw from social situations.
Over time, these challenges can affect how we feel and how connected we are to the people around us.
That’s why looking after your hearing is an important part of looking after your overall wellbeing too.
If you’ve noticed changes in your hearing, or you’re finding conversations more difficult than they used to be, our audiologists are here to listen, offer support and help you understand your options.

For World Alzheimer’s Day, we’re highlighting the important connection between hearing health and cognitive health. 👂🧠
Hearing loss is recognised as a modifiable risk factor associated with cognitive decline and dementia. While hearing loss does not directly cause Alzheimer’s disease, untreated hearing difficulties can make communication more challenging and may contribute to social isolation and increased listening effort.
If you or someone you know is affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia, support and advice is available through organisations such as Alzheimer’s Society, which provides information and practical support for people living with dementia and their families.
Support for your hearing is important too. If you’re concerned about your hearing or have noticed changes, our audiologists are here to help. Book a hearing assessment with The Ear Place at earplace.co.uk.
