Jonathan Oakes is an experienced artist who is passionate about the natural world, the majority of his artwork is deeply influenced by environmental concerns. His highly individual paintings are abstract by definition but have an illustrative quality about them. He utilises layers and mark making to add depth and narrative. In general his artworks are created using mixed media on canvas, paper or large abandoned photographs. He hopes to create a starting point for the viewerโs imagination as they contemplate the artwork.

We are three artists and friends with contrasting styles and complementary beliefs.โฃ
โฃ
Between us, our work is challenging in its scale, bold and dynamic. It is poetic, atmospheric and dreamlike. It is subtly subversive, revealing and compelling.โฃ
โฃ
We take our artistic practice seriously and have fun while doing it. As second career mature artists, we have a strong commitment to our work and to our evolving perspectives but aim to do this with a lightness and a sense of enjoyment.โฃ
โฃ
Our shared inspiration includes freedom, individuality and self-expression. Reflected in our collective work, you will see a range of source inspiration. It may be places of beauty we have lived, places of beauty we live now, nature and changing seascape or our own bodies and self-identity.โฃ

As a way of exploring the tension between celebration and mortality, pleasure and pain, this exhibition returns repeatedly to motifs associated with the studios, cafรฉs, banquets and bohemian life of the artist: fruit, smoke, oysters, skulls, absinthe, and, in particular, the painterโs table โ perhaps the most familiar piece of furniture in an artistโs studio.โฃ
โฃ
The exhibition is also an exploration of the artistโs โmythโ and reflects the broader cultural tendency to romanticize the โlone geniusโ. Something I have always been fascinated with.ย โฃ
โฃ
These paintings exist somewhere between darkness and light, life and death, imagination and reality. I have worked from source material that directly references artists such as Picasso and Van Gogh, entering their worlds and reimagining their subjects in an attempt to create an alternative reality โ something grittier, perhaps, and closer to the truth behind the myth of the lone genius.โฃ
โฃ
Ultimately, the paintings are concerned with the strange space where beauty and decay coexist; where pleasure carries the shadow of mortality, and where the act of painting itself becomes a way of confronting both.โฃ

Simon Hadley Attard is a figurative painter, whose paintings identify with the landscape and visual surroundings of life in England. Subjects such as whippets and lurchers, the artistโs garden, portraits of friends and family, and the art historical canon all play major roles in his painting process. House flies, pot plants and spiders suggest deeper connections of disequilibrium, as the artist explores themes that evoke climate change and the transience of time. More recent work explores themes such as the crucifixion, employing impasto oil colour and pushing the boundaries of oil painting and the marks and textures it is capable of.ย โฃ
Simon studied at Falmouth School of Art finishing in 2006 and holds an MA from the University of Arts, London.โฃ
