TIP OF THE WEEK: Can You Safely Open Your Dog’s Mouth?

Big dogs mean big responsibilities!

New pet parents in Fiji should teach their puppies, especially large breeds, to feel comfortable with gentle mouth handling from an early age.

Why? A cooperative dog makes it safer to check teeth and gums, administer medication, brush teeth, or assess potentially dangerous objects.

✅ Start with short, gentle sessions.
✅ Reward calm behaviour with treats and praise.
✅ Never force the mouth open or risk being bitten.
✅ Practise regularly before an emergency happens.

Remember: A 40kg dog is much easier to manage when trust starts at 4kg! 💚

🇫🇯🐾 Happy Fiji Day 2026! 🇫🇯💚

Your pet’s bad breath may be more than an inconvenience—it can signal painful dental disease.

Periodontal disease, gingivitis, dental calculus, fractured teeth, tooth-root infection and abscesses can cause significant pain, reduced appetite and progressive oral infection. When extraction is clinically indicated, GoVet Clinic brings professional veterinary care directly to your home, reducing travel and environmental stress for your fur baby.

Our mobile veterinary team provides convenient home visits across Suva, Nausori, Lami until Pacific Harbour allowing pets to receive care in familiar surroundings.

MISSING DOG – HABIBI

Habibi has been missing since Wednesday evening and was last seen around 7:00 pm in the Rewa Street/Samabula area, reportedly following a lady.

Habibi has become a much-loved part of her family, and her feeders are extremely worried and are desperately hoping to have her safely home.

If you have seen Habibi or have any information about her whereabouts, please contact 7208863.

Please keep an eye out around the Samabula/Rewa Street area and share this post so we can reach as many people as possible.

Let’s help get Habibi home safely.

🥥 GoVet Tip of the Week: Coconut Oil for Pets

Coconut oil can be a useful occasional addition to your pet’s care, but moderation matters. It contains medium-chain fats and can help moisturise dry skin, paw pads and noses, while adding shine to the coat. A very small amount may also be mixed with food or used on a lick mat for some dogs.

However, coconut oil is high in calories and saturated fat, so we don’t recommend routine large amounts or using it as a nutritional supplement without veterinary advice. Avoid giving it to pets prone to obesity, pancreatitis or digestive upset. Introduce slowly and stop if diarrhoea or vomiting occurs. For topical use, apply only a thin layer to healthy, unbroken skin and prevent excessive licking.

Our recommendation at GoVet: use coconut oil mainly as an occasional topical moisturiser or treat—not as a substitute for a complete, balanced diet or veterinary treatment. 🐾💚
