The ride sets off along the beach at a walk, hooves sinking softly into the sand, the sea close enough to touch from the saddle.

Riding beside the water has a calm of its own.

The creak of leather, the hush of the tide, the sway of the horse moving steadily beneath.

Inland, the grass grows tall and pale around the trail, the surf fades to a murmur, and the ride becomes an intimate conversation between horse and rider.

Warm stone, broad leaves, a body that slows of its own accord.

All the time it needs.

Some days call for salt spray.

You decide how fast you go.

Within the forest at LAUCALA, a residence takes its cue from the trees: dappled through the heat of the day, cooler at either end of it.

Daylight arrives in green, filtered through layer after layer of leaf before it reaches the pool.

Evening on the deck is a handover of sound: birdsong overhead, frogsong rising from the ferns below.

Under an hour away sits LAUCALA.

The Hangar is the last place that still looks like anywhere else - after that, nothing here resembles the world you left behind.

Forty-five minutes in the air, but it feels like you’ve crossed into another version of time altogether.

Swim. Eat. Rest. Repeat.

Poolstde lunch, coconut cracked to order, and a plate built from what the island's fields gave that morning.

The island runs on its own time.

One palm, enough shade for one decision.

To stay a while longer.

Sound first, then sight.

Breaking waves, palm trees stirring, coffee poured while the eyes adjust to first light.

Waking up at LAUCALA feels different.

Somewhere close to eighty percent of what’s served across the island was grown, harvested, or raised on it.

Fields shift with the season, rotating through soil and climate favoured at a given time of year.

The same ground that grows chilies in one season carries pineapple in

Each field carries more than one identity.

A residence with sweeping ocean views, set deep within the jungle.

Dinner slows somewhere past the first course, birdsong carrying the gaps in conversation as the light goes.

Certain dinners get retold for years afterward, and this tends to be one of them.
