🌱 Chengdu | Turning Agricultural Waste into Energy, Fertilizer & Circular Agriculture ♻️

As part of the Seminar on Agricultural South-South Cooperation Project Management for BRI Countries, organized by Hubei Vocational College of Bio-Technology, we had an inspiring two-day learning and field exposure in Chengdu, Sichuan, at the Biogas Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (BIOMA) and its demonstration sites.

🔬 At BIOMA, we explored how anaerobic microbiology, biogas engineering and biotechnology are being applied to address agricultural waste, renewable energy and resource recovery. The Institute maintains 1,500+ anaerobic microbial strains and has built significant expertise in biogas, organic-waste remediation and microbial technologies.

♻️ At the Agricultural Organic Waste Treatment Center, we saw how the concept works in practice: agricultural and livestock waste is collected from farms, transported through organized local services and treated centrally to generate biogas and valuable organic by-products.

👨‍🌾 Farmers and communities are an essential part of the cycle—farmers provide the organic waste, service teams facilitate collection and transportation, and processed organic fertilizer can return to farmland. This creates a practical connection between farmers, communities, technology and agricultural production.

🌾 At the Agricultural Green Crop-Livestock Circular Agriculture Pilot Zone, we saw the complete loop:

Farm → Waste → Biogas & Fertilizer → Crops → Livestock → Farm 🔄

The scale of implementation is equally impressive. In Sichuan's green crop-livestock circular agriculture initiatives, manure utilization has exceeded 94%, while fertilizer use has reportedly declined by 12–15% and crop yields increased by 5%+.

💡 The key takeaway for us: circular agriculture is not simply about managing waste—it is about turning waste into energy, nutrients and economic value while bringing farmers and communities into the system.

A powerful example of how science → technology → farmers → communities → sustainable food systems can work together. 🌱♻️

🌱🇵🇰🇨🇳 Beijing | From Fruit Innovation to Future Food & Smart Poultry

🍑 Morning — Fruit Industry Demonstration Park of Beijing Jingwa Agricultural Science & Technology Innovation Center in Pinggu Agricultural Innovation Zone

🧬 Centre of Excellence for Alternative Protein

During the multilateral seminar on South South cooperation Project Management, The morning visit offered practical insights into fruit-industry innovation, technology demonstration and commercialization, alongside emerging approaches to alternative proteins and future food systems.

What stood out about Jingwa Agricultural Science & Technology Innovation Center was its broader innovation model. Positioned as the “core engine” of Agricultural Zhongguancun, Jingwa connects agricultural research, technology development, demonstration, commercialization, talent development and international exchange.

Its ecosystem brings together research institutions, universities, enterprises and technology innovators to help move agricultural science from the laboratory towards practical application.

🥛 Afternoon — Dairy Industry Demonstration Park of Beijing Jingwa Agricultural Science & Technology Innovation Center in Pinggu Agricultural Innovation Zone

🐔 CP Industry
The afternoon exposure provided valuable insights into modern dairy and poultry production, smart farm management, automation and integrated livestock value chains.
At the CP Industry facility, we saw the scale and sophistication of modern poultry production. CP’s Pinggu layer operation is reported to have around 3 million laying hens and produce more than 800 million eggs annually — over 2 million eggs a day — supported by highly automated production and management systems.

💡 For us, the key lesson from the day was:
🔬 Research → ⚙️ Technology → 🌱 Demonstration → 🏭 Enterprise → 🍽️ Food Systems
From fruit innovation and alternative proteins to smart dairy and large-scale poultry production, the visits demonstrated how science, technology and enterprise can work together to transform agriculture and food systems.

🌱 From the orchard to the poultry house—innovation creates impact when research reaches production, markets and people.

🌱🇵🇰🇨🇳 Chengdu, China | From Agricultural Research to Innovation: Learning from IUA–CAAS & NASC

As part of the Seminar on Agricultural South-South Cooperation Project Management for BRI Countries, we had the opportunity to visit the Institute of Urban Agriculture (IUA), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the National Agricultural Science and Technology Center (NASC) in Chengdu on 1 July 2026.

The Pakistan delegation, comprising representatives from the CPEC Secretariat, CPEC Cell of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), and FAO Pakistan, was warmly received by Mr. Hu Yongsong, Deputy Director General and Chief of the Strategic Planning Team, and Mr. Liu Shuang, Deputy Director General, along with the wonderful IUA–CAAS team. The engagement provided a valuable platform for dialogue on China–Pakistan agricultural science, technology and innovation cooperation.

🔬 Science | 🌱 Innovation | ⚡ Speed Breeding | 🤖 Agri-Tech

Our exposure visit offered first-hand insights into innovative technologies and demonstration facilities, including speed/crop-breeding acceleration, vertical farming, rooftop agriculture and other technology-enabled production systems. Seeing these technologies in practice was particularly valuable in understanding how research can be translated into efficient, controlled and future-oriented agricultural solutions.

🥭 We also exchanged views on opportunities for China–Pakistan cooperation in mango development, including the China–Pakistan Digital Twin Mango Technology Demonstration Farm, as well as potential collaboration in joint research, technology demonstration, personnel exchange and knowledge sharing.

💡 The visit to IUA–CAAS and NASC reinforced an important lesson for us: agricultural transformation increasingly depends on connecting science 🔬, technology ⚙️, digital innovation 💻, advanced breeding 🌱 and efficient resource use.

FAO Pakistan appreciates the thoughtful coordination and partnership of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Pakistan.

We also appreciate the coordination of Dr. Shahzad Amir Naveed, Agriculture Specialist, CPEC Secretariat, and Leadership of CAAS, which helped facilitate this valuable engagement during the seminar’s field programme.

🌱 From research to demonstration, from innovation to impact.

🌱🌼 Wuhan, China | Learning from QFHS’s Canola Innovation – From “Small Seeds” to Stronger Value Chains

On 25 June 2026, as part of the Seminar on Agricultural South-South Cooperation Project Management for BRI Countries, the Pakistan delegation, comprising representatives from the CPEC Secretariat, CPEC Cell of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), FAO Pakistan, and agricultural specialists, visited Wuhan Qingfa-Hesheng Seed Co., Ltd. (QFHS) in Wuhan.

The visit, arranged by Hubei Vocational College of Bio-Technology, provided us with valuable insights into QFHS’s “Small Seeds, Great Wisdom” approach and its “going global” experience, particularly its agricultural cooperation in Pakistan. We explored the HC-021C hybrid double-low canola variety, including local research, variety demonstration, technology transfer and farmer-oriented agricultural development. QFHS’s “Variety + Technology + Industry” approach offered an interesting perspective on connecting agricultural innovation with wider value-chain development.

🌼 A particularly valuable component was the oil-processing value-chain visit arranged by Hubei Vocational College of Bio-Technology in collaboration with QFHS. We visited LiangNong (Tuanfeng) Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Huangpi Yuxiang Township Wang’s Oil Mill, and YihaiJiali (Wuhan) Grain and Oil Industry Co., Ltd., allowing us to observe oil-press machinery, rural-level processing, and standardized commercial oil processing across different scales. We greatly appreciated the thoughtful coordination and support of Ms. Zhu Xiaobo, General Manager, QFHS, in facilitating these arrangements.

🌿 We also learned how the HC-021C canola experience has contributed to Pakistan–China agricultural cooperation, including efforts to strengthen harvesting, technical services and decentralized oil extraction while developing a broader seed-to-oil value chain.

For us, the key takeaway was that meaningful South-South Cooperation goes beyond technology transfer—it is about adapting innovation to local conditions, building capacity, and connecting production with processing and markets.

The training was facilitated by FAO Pakistan in collaboration with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Pakistan, under the China Aid Programme, and organized by Hubei Vocational College of Bio-Technology. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from practical experiences of agricultural innovation and cooperation between China and Pakistan.

🌱🌼 From small seeds to stronger value chains—practical learning for sustainable agricultural transformation.
