Jobs to do in the garden in October.
October is already upon us! This brings with it certain tasks to do in the garden. October is a beautiful month with blue sky’s and the first frosts.
Listed below are particular jobs to do around the garden this month. If you would like any of these done during the regular maintenance sessions please let us know.
• Lift and divide overcrowded perennials whilst the soil is still warm.
• Empty summer pots and hanging baskets and compost the plants.
• Plant evergreen shrubs and conifer hedges.
• Cut fruited stems of blackberries and raspberries down to the ground.
• Rake up leaves from lawns, borders, paths and driveways.
• Apply autumn lawn feed to help the grass after the stresses of summer.
• Spike compacted lawns to improve drainage.
• Gather up canes and plant supports and store indoors.
• Lift gladioli and dahlia corns and store them.
• Cut back perennial plants that have died down.
• Tidy borders and add mulch to insulate plants for winter.
• A last mow can be done this month ready for winter.

LANDSCAPING TIP OF THE DAY!
🍂 Fall has arrived! 🍂
As the weather cools down, here are a few simple tips to help set your yard up for success heading into winter:
🌱 Remove weeds
Taking care of weeds in the fall can help reduce the number that pop back up in the spring.
🍁 Clear leaves & debris
Removing leaves and debris from your lawn helps prevent snow mold and other fungal issues from developing over the winter.
✂️ Give your lawn a final mow
For your last mow of the year, cut your grass a little shorter than you normally would. This can help reduce the risk of snow mold and encourage healthier growth come spring.
A little fall maintenance now can make a big difference when spring rolls around! 🌿 See less

LANDSCAPING TIP OF THE DAY!
🌿This Month in the Garden – October 🌿
October is one of those months when a little time spent in the garden really pays off.
Growth is slowing, leaves are beginning to fall and borders are starting to change, making it a good time to tidy, protect and prepare the garden for the months ahead.
A few things I'm focusing on this month:
🍂 Keep on top of fallen leaves – particularly on lawns and paths, but where possible leave a few in quieter corners for wildlife.
🌱 Give lawns some attention – rake out thatch and moss, tidy the edges and repair any bare patches while the soil is still relatively warm.
✂️ Tidy borders selectively – remove tired, damaged or diseased growth, but leave attractive seed heads and grasses standing for winter structure and wildlife.
🌳 Plant while the soil is warm – October is a brilliant time for planting trees, shrubs and many perennials, giving roots time to establish before winter.
🌿 Move and divide perennials that have become overcrowded or aren't quite in the right place.
🪴 Look after pots and containers – remove tired summer planting, raise pots slightly to improve drainage and start thinking about autumn and winter colour.
🌹 Tidy roses and shrubs – remove damaged growth and long stems that could be rocked around by winter winds, saving major pruning for the right time later in the season.
And don't feel the garden needs to be completely "put to bed".
A little messiness – fallen leaves beneath a hedge, seed heads left standing and grasses moving in the wind – is all part of a healthy autumn garden.
October is about getting the important jobs done, while allowing the garden to change naturally with the season. 🌿 See less

LANDSCAPING TIP OF THE DAY!
One of the best arguments for fall planting is that it gives plants a head start for the next growing season. When timed properly, newly planted species can grow new roots and begin to establish before going dormant. That gives them more resources to pull from the following growing season.
Fall planting also allows your plants to adapt to your local conditions and emerge according to their biological clock. No need to worry about purchasing plants that might or might not be winterized and hardened off, or worrying about protecting them against unpredictable late freezes.
If you’re planting woody species in fall, you’re usually good to plant as long as the soil is workable.
With herbaceous species, you’ll want to give timing proper consideration. Warm-season species like grasses need enough time to put down those all-important roots before entering dormancy. Cool-season species have more latitude. Timing is also dependent on where you are. In colder climates, the window for fall planting is shorter than in warmer parts of the country.

LANDSCAPING TIP OF THE DAY!
🍁🍁Fall is beautiful with all the colors It is a favorite season for many. 🍁🍁
It's what follows it is what is daunting and can be damaging.
Winter Prep for Your Yard is essential.
Your landscaping is a significant investment, and a little preparation now can help minimize winter damage while setting your yard up for a healthy spring comeback.
If your property has an irrigation system, swales (drainage ditches), or a sump pump, take time to ensure it is ready for colder months ahead. Ensure you clear debris from swales and around the sump pump discharge area. Drain and winterize your irrigation system, (there are plenty of local professionals who can help if you're unsure how).
Drain, disconnect and store your garden hose, turn off exterior water taps.
The basic but no less important tasks. Clean up leaves and debris. Trim trees and branches. Cut back perennials where appropriate. Protect vulnerable shrubs and young trees. Apply a final lawn fertilization before freeze up.
A little effort goes a long way. See less

🍂 🍂Before you cut everything back this fall, think twice!🍂 🍂
Leaving some healthy stems and seed heads standing can add beautiful winter interest while also providing a natural food source for birds and other wildlife. Focus your fall cleanup on damaged or diseased growth, and let some of the garden stay just as nature intended. 🌿
Sometimes, a little less cleanup can be a good thing.

5 Things Not to Do in Your Garden This Fall
Fall gets a bad reputation as the season where the garden just shuts down and everything gets put away. Some of the biggest mistakes we see happen right now, usually from people trying to tidy up too aggressively or too early. Here are five things worth skipping this fall, and a few things worth doing instead.
1. Don't cut back everything in sight. Seed heads and hollow stems are winter housing for beneficial insects, and a lot of perennials actually protect their own crowns better with some growth left standing.
2: Don't stop watering the second it cools off. Trees and shrubs planted this year or last still need consistent moisture right up until the ground freezes.
3: Don't skip the leaves entirely. Whole leaves piled thick on the lawn can smother grass, but shredded leaves make excellent mulch and free soil food.
4: Don't fertilize trees and shrubs right now. Late-season fertilizing pushes tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before frost.
5: Don't wait until the ground is frozen to plant. If you've got something you've been meaning to get in the ground, there's still time, but that window is closing.
