Quick, unplanned trip to PEI this weekend, and I got to catch up with some recently made old friends.
Sheila and I had a time at the PEI International Shellfish Festival, and Ben Chase did not disappoint.
This young Nashville recording artist from Skinners Pond, PEI, has helped revive my interest in country music. But maybe more importantly, Ben and his family helped revive my faith in humanity a little bit too. What a genuinely great bunch of people. Especially his grandfather, Alfie.
The crazy part is how I ended up meeting any of them in the first place.
A few weeks ago, my family was all away for the weekend, so I decided to head over to PEI. My cousin, who we’ll call Sammy, and his son were bacheloring it too while his girls were away back-to-school shopping. The plan was pretty simple: Sammy and I were going to spend the weekend working on his outdoor kitchen.
I get there and Sammy says, “Change of plans. We’re going to Skinners Pond with my buddy Gordie to a songwriter’s circle.”
Well, I’m all in. I love live music, especially the up-close-and-personal kind.
Then Gordie shows up in a Dodge Charger Hellcat with a Mexican wingman named Jesús.
At this point I’m thinking, well, at least I got sh***un.
IYKYK.
So, a little background…
For the last three years, Ben Chase has hosted a songwriter’s circle in his hometown of Skinners Pond. Each year he brings a group of Nashville recording artists to PEI to share their music and, even better, the stories behind the songs.
This year Ben was joined by Grant Bias, Jacob Garner, Tyler Farr (A Guy Walks Into a Bar), Lily Pearl Black (that’s right, you heard me), Griffen Palmer, Madison Kozak, Adam Wendler, Andrew Bloom and Terri Jo Box.
The amount of talent packed into the Stompin’ Tom Centre over those three days was incredible.
Anyway, back to the story.
Three or four rounds of songs later, apparently we’re going to an after-party.
Since I wasn’t drinking, somehow the random guy from Nova Scotia ended up being tasked with driving Ben’s family down the road to a beach party.
And that’s how a weekend that was supposed to be spent building an outdoor kitchen ended with me standing on a beach in Skinners Pond, surrounded by a bonfire, fireworks, some of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet, not one but TWO tuna landings… and a heartfelt speech from Gordie, who, for reasons I still don’t completely understand, was wearing a sleeveless Golden Girls T-shirt.
You really couldn’t make this stuff up.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it, these people I had just met stopped feeling like strangers.
Sometimes the best memories are the ones you couldn’t have planned if you tried.
Fast-forward a few weeks and I’m back on PEI, this time watching Ben play the PEI International Shellfish Festival and catching up with some recently made old friends.
Funny how that happens.
Thank you, Sammy, for changing the plans.
Thank you, Gordie, for the ride, the stories and whatever the hell was going on with that Golden Girls shirt.
Thank you, Ben, Alfie and the entire “Chase” family for making some random guy from Nova Scotia feel like he belonged there.
And thank you, Skinners Pond.
You gave this Nova Scotian one hell of a PEI story.
Summer ’26.
