Admittedly, our turkey’s lifejacket could use a better fit! If you’re heading out on the water, make sure yours fits snugly and is properly fastened. 🦃
But seriously, we wish you a lovely long weekend, however you spend it. Know that our volunteers are on call all weekend if you need help.

The busy summer season may be over, but the work behind the scenes carries on. Weekly training is always on the calendar, and every equipment check and vessel inspection helps make sure our volunteers are ready when you need them—whatever the season.

Congratulations, Colin and Wayne! There’s a lot of learning and practice behind this milestone. Becoming a full crew member can take months or years, depending on past experience and how much time someone can devote to training.
It means they’ve demonstrated the knowledge, skills and proficiency required to take part in search and rescue missions. However long it takes, it’s a big accomplishment—and one worth celebrating!

Where's Oscar? Our training mannequin is easy to see in these calm waters. But add waves and chop, and finding someone in the water becomes much harder. That’s why our volunteers practise searching in different conditions—building the skills they’ll need when someone’s counting on them.
Exercises like this allow our team to build vital muscle memory so we’re ready when every second counts. We run training exercises like this with "Oscar" to safely simulate real-life rescue operations in local waters.
Quick Safety Tip: Always dress for the water temperature, not just the weather, and always wear your PFD when out on the water; you don't know when you'll need it!

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today we remember the children who never came home from residential schools, honour Survivors, and hold their families and communities in our thoughts.

This is a great read for anyone interested in marine or ground search and rescue, and in the people who volunteer to help others when they need it most.
Thank you to Sandra Thomas and the Coast Reporter for such a thoughtful, well-written look at search and rescue on the Sunshine Coast. Well worth a read!
