Excessive Speeding Leads to Vehicle Impound and Steep Fines

Last night at 10:30 p.m, Sunshine Coast RCMP stopped a vehicle travelling 107 km/hr on Sunshine Coast Hwy near Norwest Bay Rd in Sechelt. That’s 47 km/hr over the speed limit, on a winding road, in the dark.

Driving at this rate of speed drastically reduces the driver’s ability to react to conditions, hazards, wildlife and other road users, dramatically increasing the risks for serious harm.

Consequences for this driver included:

🔴 7-day vehicle impound
🔴 $368 violation ticket
🔴 ICBC demerit points

Speed limits exist to protect everyone – including our local wildlife. Please slow down. 🙏🏼

Cell phone scam alert!! 😡

Have you heard of the new cellphone/device upgrade scam? Here is how it works:

* Someone calls you pretending to be your phone provider, offering you a free upgrade for a phone or tablet, at a discount that seems too good to be true with incentives for taking action immediately.
*The fraudster gains login credentials to victim's accounts through their security questions under the guise of "identity verification'.
*New phones or devices with be purchased on the victim's accounts without their knowledge and mailed to their homes by the legitimate phone providers.
*The fraudster will contact you again, saying something like there was a mistake and the wrong phone was sent or the discount wasn't applied.
*They will ask you to return the device to them with a provided return shipping label and you will be left making payments for a device you don't have.

The Sunshine Coast RCMP ask you to remember fraudsters can mask their identity and phone number by "spoofing" so it looks like a legitimate phone provider is calling you.

If an offer seems sudden, rushed or too good to be true, disconnect the call and call your legitimate phone provider yourself to verify the promotion.
