It is super fun using coloured gels in the studio to create special effects. It works especially well with sports, music and dance photos. Here is an example of how coloured gels can change the whole feel of an image. The first image has one additional light, the second has two plus a splash of smoke.
Which one do you like best?
These photos are a great option for our Signature Grad Portraits. You can bring just about anything into the studio to create portraits that reveal your distinct personality! Click on the link in the profile to learn more about our portraits for grads.

It is never too late to capture one of life's milestones... This spring I had the pleasure doing a photoshoot with Niyah and her family to celebrate her high school graduation even though she had actually graded the year before. Niyah and her mom Sonya wanted some beautiful portraits of Niyah in her grad gown before the gown was passed on to someone new.
We decided that spring would be the best time because the flower motif of the dress would look stunning in a natural background - so we had to wait almost a year before the timing was right.
We did a whole series of photographs with Niyah, then added in some family portraits. After graduation, many things can change. Your grad can move away to post secondary school or get a job in another city, new spouses and kids may join the family... this may be the last opportunity to photography your nuclear family before all those changes take place.

I am so excited about the "Storybook" we have added to our product lineup. It is a beautifully handcrafted book made in the Italian tradition. It features a soft leather (or faux leather) cover, hand-made paper pages, and traditional stitched binding. The rich vibrant colours prove it is a perfect marriage of modern printing technology and traditional book construction. I am so in love with this Storybook.

It is not uncommon for a client to arrive at the studio, slightly nervous about their headshot session, and say something like, "I am not good in front of the camera."
Completely fair. Standing in front of the lights, wondering what to do with your hands and trying to “look natural" can feel like a lot.
That’s exactly why our headshot experience is guided throughout. While "showing you what to do with your hands" we have easy conversation and maybe share a laugh or two. By the end of the session, I the comment I hear most often is:
“That was really fun.”
When people relax, authentic expressions appear naturally. And those are the moments that create the most engaging portraits.

One of my favourite reasons to create portraits?
Celebrating life's milestones: events, achievements or even simply moments that deserve to be remembered in a way that lasts longer than the day itself.
Vayla and John recently celebrated an incredible 60 years of marriage. ❤️
To mark the occasion, they returned to Nelson where they first met all those years ago. Walking those familiar streets, sharing stories, laughing about memories... it was the perfect place to celebrate the journey they've built together.
I was honoured to join them in their celebrations and create a 60th anniversary portrait that not only captured their relationship, but also their personalities and style.
Congratulations, Vayla and John, on 60 wonderful years together. Thank you for letting me be a small part of such a meaningful celebration. Here's to many more adventures together.

Great portraits are all about light.
That's why you'll usually find me working with strobes, flash, or reflectors—they let me shape the light and create exactly the look I'm after - even outdoors.
But rules are made to be broken.
On this late afternoon, the sun had just dropped behind the mountain and a blanket of cloud turned the entire sky into a giant softbox. The light was soft and flattering, perfect for illuminating . The darker background naturally separated Julia from the scene, and the lupins added colour, texture, and a little bit of magic.
No flash. No reflectors. Just perfect timing.
Thank you, Mother Nature.

Another image from my personal project, monochrome music!
Thank you . It was fun working with you and exploring the light! Are you inspired to pick up your flute again?

Generic artwork can add something pretty to your house but portraits of your loved ones make a house your home. Portraits create connections and help you feel grounded when you walk into the room, they evoke memories and can tell your story.
Take this portrait of Vayla and John for example. They have built a wonderful life together and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They wanted a portrait that at a glance would show off their personalities and connection to each other. Not a stiffly posed picture gussied up in clothing they rarely wear. So we spent some time together in the studio, having a great time while we captured their connection.
The end result? A portrait they can display that immediate reminds of the life they have built together. And the pièce de résistance? They paired their anniversary print with their wedding photograph and voila! instant story.
Photographs matter; but imagery stored on a device is in constant danger of being forgotten during software updates. P**f! Gone.
Prints matter more.

As photographers we spend a lot of time behind the camera... but every once in a while it is good to get on the other side of the lens and remind ourselves what if feels like to be in front of the camera. Yes! I was nervous. Yes! I didn't know what do do with my hands. Yes! I was worried about capturing my "best side". Thanks to for putting me at ease and creating some fabulous summer fun headshots!
