๐Ÿพ OUCH! What to do if your dog meets a porcupine this fall ๐Ÿพ

As the autumn air cools down, local wildlifeโ€”including porcupinesโ€”become much more active as they forage for the winter. This means a higher chance of your curious pup getting a face full of painful quills during a walk or hike. ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ•

If your dog gets quilled, please do NOT try to pull them out yourself at home. Here is exactly what you should do instead:
1๏ธโƒฃ Keep your dog calm and restrict their movement. Prevent them from rubbing their face or paws against the ground, which can push the quills in deeper or break them off.
2๏ธโƒฃ Do NOT cut the quills. A common myth is that cutting quills makes them easier to remove. In reality, it causes them to splinter or swell, making them much harder and more painful to extract.
3๏ธโƒฃ Call us (or the nearest emergency vet) immediately. Quills have tiny, backward-facing barbs that act like fishhooks. They travel deeper into the body over time and can cause severe internal infections or puncture vital organs if left untreated.

Safe, thorough quill removal almost always requires sedation. This keeps your pet completely pain-free during the procedure and allows us to help prevent leaving fragments behind.

Keep your dogs on a leash in wooded or brushy areas, especially at dawn and dusk when porcupines love to wander!๐Ÿ“

This is not something we would normally do but in light of the recent loss of life in our vet world I feel it is pertinent to share why su***de is so high in our industry.

We're told to let it go and not let the hurtful and inconsiderate comments bother you while still putting yourself out there to provide life saving care for people's livelihood and family, but sometimes they hit a nerve. And sometimes this needs to be said; at some point we have ourselves, our families and our own animals that need to be looked after.

This person didn't realize that Dr Victor hadn't been home yet that day. We had emergent and urgent cases on top of the already fully booked schedule. Multiple surgeries to perform, a completely double booked afternoon. He hasn't been able to take an actual lunchbreak this week (maybe in the last month), then left at the end of most people's day to go preg check a herd of cattle. When he received a phone call for this urgent care case, he stopped on his way by home to finish helping with his own chores so he could focus on the impending surgery to provide care for a patient he had never seen before and knew he would be there until well after midnight. So because of that, the patient had to wait. 15 minutes.

Please be patient. Please give our team respect and decency. We are all people and we're are trying our best to care for our clients. Plus the clients of all the other practices who choose not to provide these critical services to their own clients, forcing others like us to do so. We love what we do and our purpose in life is to help our clients through caring for their pets and livestock.

Don't be the reason someone closes their doors to offering emergency services in your town. Don't let it be ok for another aspiring vet to take their own life because of comments like these. We are all a team in your animal's health and care. We need you to be our team mate. Please thank your vet care team for everything they have given up in their life today to help look after your animals.

UPDATE: The review has now been removed and client has sincerely apologized. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

๐ŸŒพ Donโ€™t waste winter feed on open cows! ๐ŸŒพ

With winter around the corner, feed costs are one of your biggest expenses. Keeping a cow that isn't bred can cost you hundreds of dollars in feed and labor over the winter monthsโ€”money that yields zero return.

Pregnancy checking your herd helps you make profitable management decisions today.
๐Ÿ’ฐ Save significant feed costs by marketing non-pregnant cows now.
๐Ÿ“ˆ Maximize your winter forage for productive, bred females.
๐Ÿšœ Improve your herdโ€™s overall reproductive efficiency.

Our schedule is filling up fast for the season! Call the clinic today at 306-752-7387 or send us a text to secure your booking. Letโ€™s protect your bottom line this winter.

This week, over 100 local Grade 4 students traded their traditional classrooms for hands-on learning for our From getting their hands dirty in the soil to discovering how food gets from local fields to their dinner plates, our students gained a whole new appreciation for the hard work that feeds our community.

This unforgettable educational experience would not have been possible without the generous support of our incredible sponsors:

๐Ÿพ "My dog ate WHAT?!" ๐Ÿพ

From missing socks and dropped human food to full-on trash bin raids, dogs are notorious for eating things they shouldnโ€™t. In the veterinary world, we call this "Dietary Indiscretion" and itโ€™s one of the most common reasons pups end up in our clinic!

Here is what every dog owner needs to know to keep their furry family members safe:

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ How to Prevent It
*Secure the Trash: Use locking garbage cans or keep trash bins behind closed pantry doors.
*Keep High-Risk Items Up: Put away socks, hair ties, underwear, counter-top food, and small toys.
*Watch Table Scraps: Fatty foods, cooked bones, onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, and artificial sweeteners (like Xylitol/Birch Bark) are hazardous.
*Dog-Proof the Yard: Check for toxic plants, wild mushrooms, or debris before letting your dog out.

๐Ÿก What to Do at Home (Mild Upset)
If your dog ate something slightly off (like extra table scraps or a bit of harmless yard grass) and shows minor stomach upset:
*Rest the Stomach: Withhold food for a few hours beyond normal meals (keep fresh water available at all times).
*Observe Closely: Keep a close eye on their energy level, appetite, and stool.

๐Ÿšซ Important: NEVER try to induce vomiting at home without direct guidance from a veterinarian. Doing so can cause severe damage to their esophagus or risk aspiration into their lungs.

๐Ÿšจ When to Call the Vet IMMEDIATELY
Don't wait if you notice any of these red flags:
*Repeated vomiting or dry heaving
*Extreme lethargy, weakness, or collapse
*Painful, hard, or bloated abdomen
*Ingestion of a known toxin, medication, or non-food item (socks, toys, bones)
*Blood in vomit or stool
*Inability to keep water down for more than 12 hours
