Varley Art Gallery
The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is a vital cultural hub for artists and diverse communities. Free Admission. Varley died in 1969. Unionville.
The Varley Art Gallery of Markham features frequently changing exhibitions from the permanent collection as well as historical contemporary exhibitions drawn from local, national and international sources. New ways of seeing and appreciating art are enhanced through a broad range of dynamic hands-on art-related activities, including group tours, school programs, studio art classes, workshops and lectures, and family activities, designed to appeal to audiences of all ages and interests. The gallery encompasses the historic Kathleen McKay house dating from the 1840's (now the McKay Art Centre) that became the home of Frederick Horsman Varley for the last 12 years of his life. Through a generous gift by Kathleen to the Town of Markham, the Town and a group of dedicated volunteers undertook to build a 15,000 sq' gallery just doors away from the historic house on Main St. Today historic village of Unionville and the Varley Art Gallery represent the second most popular tourist attraction in York Region while serving the visual arts needs and interests for the people of Markham.

โณ Our first 72 hours.
Last week, the Varley completed its first-ever 72-hour durational performance, welcoming visitors continuously, day and night, for ๐๐น๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ by exhibiting artist Anique Jordan.
Our sincere thanks to Anique Jordan for initiating this ambitious performance, and to the entire Varley team who helped bring it to life, especially Gallery Curator Anik Glaude, who worked closely with the artist to coordinate the program.
And, of course, thank you to everyone who stepped through our doors, whether during the day, late at night, or in the early hours of the morning, to experience and support ๐๐น๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐.
As the Varley continues to grow, we remain committed to expanding the ways our communities can encounter and engage with art.
Many more new experiences to come.
| About the Program |
Over approximately 72 hours, Jordan inhabited the gallery through unscripted periods of rest, sleep, and travel. Informed by the Shouter Baptist spiritual practice of โmoaning,โ which involves extended fasting, ๐๐น๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ turned to dreams and bodily experience as sources of knowledge, asking the Gallery to bend to the artistโs rhythms and reconsider its relationship to space and time.
Presented as part of ๐ ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ธ ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐น๐, curated by Essence Harden.

Currently on view at Milliken Mills Park, ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐จ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฆ๐๐ป is part of ๐ข๐๐ฟ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฑ: ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ ๐๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐ผ๐บ, co-produced by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham through our Community Artist in Residence program.
Spanning 2,500 square feet of civic lawn in Markham, the living installation transforms the landscape through a mycelium-inspired pattern planted with native Ontario species that bloom yellow from early spring through late fall. Rather than replacing the existing lawn, the work evolves alongside it, allowing plants, soil organisms, pollinators, weather, maintenance, and visitors to become part of an artwork that changes from season to season.
Curated by Yan Wu, the project extends Xiaojing Yanโs practice with living materials into public space, inviting us to reconsider a familiar patch of lawn as a site of ecology, relationship, and care.

In ๐ ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ธ ๐ง๐ต๐ถ๐ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐น๐, Anique Jordan considers how truth is made, inherited, and given form. The exhibition grows from Jordanโs research into the Flying Africansโstories of enslaved people who escaped bo***ge by taking flightโand connections between the Gullah Geechee communities of the Carolinas and her family history in Trinidad. Jordan asks what becomes possible when ancestral narratives, dreams, and spiritual knowledge are approached as truth-telling systems.
Through photography, performance, and installation, Jordan develops a visual language of glitches, shadows, blurs, portals, and disjointed bodies. Monumental photographs, rearrangeable light boxes, and images printed on glass blur the boundaries between reality and the seemingly impossible. Here, flight is at once movement, refusal, and a way of knowing.
