Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Country Fest

Have you ever spotted farmland in our community going a vibrant red? That's cranberries!

Cranberry season in Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows usually takes place between late-September and November. The fruit is harvested by covering fields in 15 to 20 centimetres of water, then using machines to beat them off the plants. The cranberries float to the surface, then are rounded up and cleaned before being sold fresh or used to make sauce or juice.

Cranberries are native to British Columbia, and have been around for a long time! They were used by Indigenous peoples as food, dye, and medicine, and were often traded alongside furs in BC's early history. Our province's production of cranberries accounts for over 10% of all cranberries in North America, and are a fixture of the fall harvest.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Country Fest joins people across the country in recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who carry their memories and experiences forward.

The lasting impacts of residential schools and colonial policies are still felt in Indigenous communities today. This day is only a starting point in recognizing the painful truths of history, and standing together as we work toward healing and understanding.

Take this day to listen, learn, and reflect.

🍂 Fall is officially here!

⌛ Today, September 22nd, is Fall Equinox! The word Equinox means equal day and night - as the sun is directly above the equator, the split of daylight and darkness is near 50/50 (though due to refraction of light, the even split often comes a few days later).

🚜 For us in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, the agricultural season is far from over! The fruits and vegetables in season move from sweet berries and tomatoes to autumn staples like cranberries, corn and pumpkins.

🌽 The season also brings with it the fun of corn mazes and pumpkin patches for the public to visit, and experience a bit of agriculture first-hand.

The Alouette Men's Shed has been a huge supporter of our fair for years! If you took a walk on our sturdy patio this year, or sat at our covered picnic tables, you experienced the products of their hard work! They even helped guests find spots to park at our RCMP Musical Ride event!

The Men's Shed is a great addition to our community, and we are lucky to be able to host and encourage their work down here at the fairgrounds. As an affiliate of the Men's Shed Association of BC, they promote positive mental health and provide a group for all men in the community to gather in.

Thanks so much to the Alouette Men's Shed for all their help with the fair! We heavily encourage you all to go check them out if you want to participate in all the hard work they do!
