Proper Breathing During Strength Training

Proper breathing during lifting is crucial for efficient, safe, and effective movement.

Basic breathing guideline:

* Inhale during the eccentric phase — breathe in as you lower the weight or lengthen the working muscle.

* Exhale during the concentric phase — breathe out as you lift the weight or shorten the working muscle.

Think: “Inhale to lower, exhale to lift.”

Maintaining a rhythmic breathing pattern throughout your set can help control your pace, conserve energy, maintain focus, and support proper technique.

Breathe through your nose and out through your mouth when appropriate. Nasal breathing can help regulate breathing and promote control, while exhaling through the mouth can make it easier to release air during exertion.

Engage and brace your core to help stabilize your spine and create a strong foundation for movement. Avoid unnecessarily holding your breath, particularly if you are new to strength training or have a cardiovascular or vascular condition.

If you’re new to fitness—or your breathing pattern isn’t yet consistent—start with lighter weights. Practice coordinating your breathing with the movement and learn how to brace your core before progressing to heavier loads.

Remember: Don’t rush the movement, don’t hold your breath, and don’t sacrifice your breathing for the weight.

By practicing proper breathing and bracing, you can support safer lifting, maintain better form, improve control, and get more out of every repetition.
