Completed a custom order for beeswax tapers this past week.
So, why is beeswax so dear?
Female honeybees produce beeswax from 4 pairs of wax glands on their abdomens. These glands are at peak production on worker bees for only 6 days, from 12 days to 18 days of life. Bees must consume 8 pounds of honey to produce just one pound of wax.
These tapers used about 14 lbs. of beeswax = 112 lbs. of honey consumed!

Today the truck arrived from Quebec with sucrose for our bees and other beekeepers.
So why do we feed our bees sucrose?
In our area, golden rod and aster is the dominant fall honey flow and is high in indigestible solids, which can be hard on the beeโs gut, especially when it is too cold to go out and take a bathroom break during the winter months. The bees will take the sucrose and fill every empty cell in the hive.
Liquid sucrose is pure clean energy for the bees, is completely digested by the honey bee and leaves no residue in the gut.
