Being mortgage-free and being financially ready for retirement are not the same thing.
I came across a video discussing the possibility of Canadians becoming âhouse rich and cash poorâ in retirement, and that expression stuck with me.
Because a home can become an incredibly valuable asset over 20 or 30 years.
But we can't buy groceries with the kitchen counter.
We can't pay the electricity bill with the equity in the living room.
And unless we sell, downsize, borrow against the property or otherwise access that equity, much of that wealth remains exactly where it is: in the house.
That doesn't mean paying off your mortgage is the wrong goal.
Quite the opposite.
It means retirement planning needs another question alongside:
âWill my house be paid off?â
Ask:
âWhat will pay for my life once it is?â
And THAT is Financial Freedom Power.
I saved a video claiming there's a âtrickâ banks don't want homeowners to know.
The trick?
Pay extra toward your mortgage principal.
That's not really a secret. đ
But the financial impact behind it is absolutely worth understanding.
How much interest am I willing to pay in exchange for having more cash available today?

âWhy keep paying a landlord when I could be paying for my own building?â đąđ°
It sounds like an easy decision.
But buying commercial property isn't automatically the better financial move.
Ownership can help you build an asset and give your business greater control over its space. But it can also require a significant down payment, financing, property taxes, insurance, maintenance, repairs and improvements.
And there's another cost that's easy to overlook:
What else could that money be doing for your business?
Could the down payment fund expansion? Hire employees? Buy equipment? Reduce expensive debt? Give you a stronger cash reserve?
Renting, meanwhile, doesn't build ownershipâbut it can preserve cash and give a growing business more flexibility to move, expand or change direction.
So the question isn't simply:
âRent or buy?â
It's:
âWhich option puts my business in the stronger financial position?â
Sometimes owning the building is part of building wealth.
Sometimes the freedom not to own it is exactly what the business needs.

đ Some lessons are too important to keep to ourselves.
We learn about money through experience, conversations, mistakes, and the advice people share with us along the way.
But what if we could pass some of that knowledge on before someone has to learn everything the hard way?
Thatâs part of what inspired me to write Be Wise My Darlings!
I wanted to bring practical financial knowledge together in a book that encourages readers to think about their money, ask questions, and make informed decisions for themselves.
Whether youâre beginning your financial journey, looking to build better habits, or hoping to share a little financial wisdom with someone you love, this book was written with you in mind.

A book to read, reflect on, and share.

Seeing money accumulate in your business account feels good. đ°
But hereâs a lesson every business owner needs to learn:
The balance in your bank account is not the same thing as the amount your business can afford to spend.
Some of that money may already have a job.
Taxes. Payroll. Supplier invoices. Insurance. Loan payments. Upcoming expenses. And ideally, a reserve for the month when business isn't quite as busy as expected.
So before making that $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000 purchase because âthe money is there,â ask yourself:
đĄ What bills are already committed?
đĄ What taxes still need to be paid?
đĄ How much working capital does the business need?
đĄ What happens if revenue slows next month?
A healthy bank balance can make you feel wealthy.
Healthy cash flow is what keeps you in business.
Don't just ask, âDo I have the money?â
Ask: âCan my business afford to let this money go?â

The Chanel Bag Theory â with a financial twist. đ
A Chanel bag doesn't lower its price because most people can't afford it.
That doesn't make the bag less valuable.
But here's the part of the theory I think we need to talk about:
Not being ableâor simply choosing notâto buy the bag doesn't make you less valuable either.
We often attach status to the things we own. The car. The house. The clothes. The vacations. The handbag.
And sometimes we stretch our finances to obtain them because of what we think owning them says about us.
But something can be beautiful, desirable and even worth its priceâŠ
and still not belong in your budget.
Walking away doesn't mean âI'm not successful enough.â
Sometimes it means:
âI know exactly what my money needs to do for me right now.â
The Chanel bag can hold its value.
So can you.
Without buying it.
đĄ Your net worth and your self-worth are two very different things.

Imagine coming home after a kitchen fire.
Everyone is safe. That's what matters.
Then comes the insurance claim.
âCan you give us your policy number?â
You know you're insured.
You know you have the paperwork.
You just have absolutely no idea where it is.
08/29/2026
âI'll deal with it later.â
A bill arrives.
An insurance document gets emailed.
A warranty goes into a drawer.
A renewal notice gets put on the counter.
None of it takes very long to deal with.
So we leave it for later.
And then later becomes a pile.
Now we have to find the document, remember what it was for, figure out whether we already dealt with it, search through emails, check dates...
And the five-minute task becomes an hour-long headache.
Organization isn't about spending your Sunday afternoon filing paperwork.
Sometimes it's simply about taking five minutes today so you don't lose five hours later.
Save it.
Name it.
Put it where you'll know how to find it.
Then move on with your life. đ
What's one tiny task you've been telling yourself you'll âdo laterâ?

â ïž Nobody plans for life to suddenly become complicated.
But it does.
Someone passes away.
A home is damaged.
A relationship changes.
A baby arrives.
You buy a house.
You start a business.
You prepare for retirement.
And suddenly, the question isn't only "What do I need to do?"
It's:
Where is everything?
Where's the insurance policy?
The will?
The mortgage information?
The warranty?
The account information?
The contract?
The document someone needs right now?
Financial organization matters on ordinary Tuesdays.
But its real value becomes incredibly clear when life changes.
You don't need to memorize everything.
You need a system that helps you know what you have, what needs attention, and where to find it when you need it.
That's one of the reasons Financial Freedom Power has evolved far beyond simply talking about money.
Because financial freedom isn't only about building wealth.
It's also about being prepared for real life. đ
Financial Freedom Power
Less searching.
More clarity.
More peace of mind.

đĄ I found one of my old mortgage statements from 2017 while organizing my financial documents.
Looking at it made me stop and think.
At the time, I simply made my regular mortgage payments. I didn't know there were strategies that could help reduce the amount of interest paid over the life of a mortgage.
One of them is making additional principal paymentsâif your mortgage allows it.
For example, if my mortgage balance had been $146,971, I could have chosen to make an extra payment of $971, bringing the balance down to $146,000.
It may seem like a small difference.
But every extra dollar applied to the principal means future interest is calculated on a slightly lower balance.
I can't go back and change what I did in 2017.
But I can share what I've learned, hoping it helps someone else ask the right questions before signingâor renewingâtheir mortgage.
Because financial freedom isn't just about earning more money.
Sometimes, it's about understanding the options you already have.

đ Not every mortgage offers the same prepayment privileges. Before making extra principal payments, check your mortgage terms or speak with your lender to understand what options are available to you.
đ Had you ever heard of this strategy before today?
***This strategy may not be available with every mortgage. Always check your lender's prepayment privileges before making additional principal payments.
