Kent Harrison Search and Rescue
Volunteer SAR team serving the District of Kent, Harrison Hot Springs and surrounding area.
Another great video from the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP on boating safety on Harrison Lake, featuring our very own BC AdventureSmart Educator and SAR Manager, Jayson Gill!
In the last three years, 10% to 15% of KHSAR's call volume has been for distressed boaters on Harrison Lake.
Be prepared when you go out on the water this summer by following the advice in this video:
- Carry essential safety equipment, including but not limited to warm clothing, extra food, a signaling device, a marine radio, and a flare.
- Make sure everyone WEARS a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), don't just store them on the boat!
- Keep essential emergency equipment in easy-access places on your watercraft.
Some great insight into the dangerous conditions that can be found on Harrison Lake!

We extend our deepest condolences to Mike's family and friends, and those who worked alongside Mike at Coquitlam Search and Rescue and throughout the SAR community. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

If youโre planning to hike, explore, or adventure in the backcountry this weekend, please PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE FORECAST.
Environment and Climate Change Canada, in partnership with the BC Wildfire Service, has issued a weather notification for increased wildfire activity through Saturday.
The combination of hot temperatures, dry conditions, and thunderstorms means there is an elevated risk of new wildfire starts from lightning, along with strong winds that can rapidly spread existing fires.
High temperatures are also expected this weekend. Heat-related illness and dehydration are among the most common reasons hikers require search and rescue during the summer months.
Bring more water than you think youโll need, replenish electrolytes on longer hikes, take regular breaks in the shade, and donโt ignore early warning signs such as excessive fatigue, dizziness, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps, or confusion. Once youโre dehydrated, it becomes much harder to recover while continuing your hike.
Thunderstorms are especially dangerous in alpine terrain. If your objective includes exposed ridges or summits, consider changing your plans or choosing a lower-elevation hike. Lightning can strike well ahead of the rain, and if you hear thunder, youโre already close enough to be struck.

If youโre caught in a thunderstorm:
โฐ๏ธ Descend immediately from summits and ridgelines.
โ Avoid isolated trees, cliff edges, and bodies of water.
โ๏ธ Spread your group out.
โฐ Wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before continuing.
Poor air quality can cause headaches, coughing, eye irritation, and reduced exercise tolerance. Those with asthma or other respiratory conditions should carefully consider reducing strenuous outdoor activity if smoke conditions worsen.
If you see smoke or a wildfire, report it immediately:

Stay safe this weekend. Make conservative decisions, HAVE AN EXIT PLAN, and remember that turning around is always the right decision if conditions change.

Are you planning on heading into the outdoors this long weekend? British Columbia Search and Rescue Association has a message for you!
Rescue response times can vary throughout the province and help might be hours away. Distance, terrain, weather, access routes, and limited connectivity can all affect how quickly search and rescue groups are able to reach someone in need.
BCSARA is encouraging everyone heading outdoors this long weekend to โBe AdventureSmartโ by using the free tools, resources, and educational materials available through our program, BC AdventureSmart. Before heading out this long weekend:
- Make a trip plan and leave it with someone you trust ๐
- Check weather, terrain, and local conditions ๐ง๏ธ ๐๏ธ
- Carry essential gear (communications) and extra supplies ๐ก ๐ฅพ
- Prepare for limited or no cell service ๐ต
- Understand that rescue response times may vary significantly depending on your location (know your location). โ๏ธ

Today, March 3rd, marks one year since we said goodbye to a pillar of our community, Neil Brewer.
While a year has passed since his courageous battle with cancer came to an end, Neilโs presence is felt every time a pager goes off and a team heads out. As a dedicated member of Kent Harrison Search and Rescue, Neil didnโt just volunteer; he led with heart, grit, and an unwavering commitment to bringing people home.
A Life of Impact
Neilโs contributions to the District of Kent were so profound that he was honored with the Freedom of the Districtโthe highest civic recognition possible. It was a testament to a life spent in service of others, whether he was navigating rugged terrain or mentoring the next generation of rescuers.
"The mountains are a little quieter without him, but the trails are safer because of the foundation he built."
