At Tunich Ha, we are grateful for the opportunity this week to collaborate with Mr. Victor Sho of the Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute (Sport Fishing Belize) and Mr. Omar Arceo of Omar's Freelance Fishing to conduct the Annual Youth Fly-Fishing Summer Camp in Punta Gorda.
The camp is designed to introduce young people to the exciting world of fly fishing while building a deeper appreciation for Belize’s coastal and marine environment.
Throughout the camp, participants learn the basics of: Casting techniques, Line tying, Safe wading, sustainable sport-fishing practices and an introduction to coastal and marine ecosystems.
The camp was held at the Cattle Landing Community Center, with an exciting field trip to the Port Honduras Marine Reserve, giving participants the opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences in one of Belize’s important marine ecosystems.
A special THANK YOU to the Cattle Landing Village Council, Nicanor Requena, Elon Young, and Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) , Garbutt’s Marine for your support and for helping make this year’s youth camp a success. Most importantly, we are proud to be part of an initiative that connects young people with nature, promotes responsible fishing, and inspires the next generation to become stewards of Belize’s coastal and marine resources.
Learn to Fish. Learn to Conserve. Protect Our Future.

A Rare and Remarkable Wildlife Encounter

Yesterday, we were privileged to witness a truly special sighting at Tunich Ha — two Scarlet Macaws, one of the most iconic and colorful birds in Belize.
The pair was first observed feeding on native wild fruits in a forested area, highlighting the critical importance of maintaining healthy natural habitats that provide food and shelter for wildlife. We later had the opportunity to observe and photograph the birds as they continued feeding on green almond fruits before eventually flying southward over the forest canopy.
Thanks to fellow members of the Toledo Birding Club, Wilfred Mutrie and Edward Bardalez, we were able to document this remarkable encounter. The birds remained in the area for approximately 45 minutes, allowing us to observe their natural feeding behavior.
Scarlet Macaws are a treasured part of our natural heritage, and sightings such as these remind us of the importance of conserving Belize’s forests and protecting wildlife from disturbance. We encourage everyone to appreciate these magnificent birds from a respectful distance and to help safeguard the habitats they depend upon.
Every rare wildlife sighting is a reminder that conservation matters. Let us continue working together to protect Belize’s incredible biodiversity for future generations. All photos and video were taken by Tunich Ha’s very own Nicanor Requena.

What a sight 😃!! This is a healthy Boa constrictor, locally known as the “wowla.” This one measured about 4.5 feet, but as Belize’s largest snake, it can grow up to 13 feet in length. Snakes like this are a key sign of a healthy ecosystem and thriving biodiversity in Belize.

A big thank you to Jonathan, Eduardo, Fidelio, and Eric for kicking off their cross country birding tour right here in Belize with us at Tunicha. Day 1 and already the energy was unmatched.
Belize is home to an extraordinary range of resident and migratory species, and having passionate birders who not only appreciate that but actively contribute to citizen science and the protection of birds and their ecosystems makes every visit that much more meaningful.
Keep inspiring people to pick up those binoculars and explore the natural world. Wishing you all the best on the rest of the tour!

Community in Action – Proud of Our Tour Guides
Today, Tunich Ha’s very own Nicanor Requena led an incredible clean-up effort alongside fellow members of the Association of Tour Guides in Toledo. As part of their commitment to community service, the team tackled three illegal garbage dumping sites along the Punta Gorda–San Antonio road.
One of the key areas cleaned was the “Dump Area” — a well-known birding hotspot that attracts water birds and raptors. Thanks to their dedication, this important natural space is now cleaner and more welcoming for both wildlife and visitors.
The team is already planning the next steps to keep the momentum going: installing signage to promote civic pride and proper waste disposal, and planting ornamental plants to restore and beautify the cleaned areas.
This is a powerful reminder that protecting our environment starts with community action. Big respect to everyone who showed up and made a difference today. 💚
