World Animal Day 2026 | See the World Through Their Eyes

Seeing the world through animals’ eyes means understanding their needs, protecting their welfare and recognising how our actions shape their lives.

Veterinarians play a vital role in safeguarding animal health and welfare, helping build a healthier world for animals, people and the planet.

Today, and every day, let’s see differently — and act for animals. 🐾

This , we proudly continue our collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to strengthen rabies elimination strategies through SARE workshops and approaches.

From local communities and veterinary professionals to governments, healthcare workers, educators, and global partners, in 2026 we all have role to play in making a world free from rabies a reality. Read here about how we have been for a decade already: https://www.fao.org/one-health/highlights/a-decade-of-working-together-towards-a-world-free-from-dog-mediated-human-rabies/en

Knowledge can save lives: Especially when it reaches people where they live.

This World Rabies Day, GARC and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance are highlighting the power of community education in preventing and eliminating rabies.

More than 35 000 people have graduated from the GARC Education Platform, building the knowledge they need to become Rabies Educators and share practical rabies prevention information in their communities. These educators help turn global health knowledge into local action. They understand their communities, speak their languages and can share important information in ways that are relevant and accessible.

Rabies Educators make a difference through global knowledge, local education, and community action.

Together, GARC and Gavi are helping strengthen the connections between health education, communities and access to lifesaving rabies prevention. This World Rabies Day, let us be .

🌍 World Rabies Day 2026

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) and World Medical Association (WMA) are joining forces to call for stronger action to end rabies.

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear — yet it is entirely preventable.

Vaccinating dogs, ensuring access to post-exposure treatment, strengthening surveillance and engaging communities are all essential links in the chain.

🤝 No single profession can end rabies alone. One Health means working together.

🌍 WVA at the UN General Assembly: From Commitment to Implementation

WVA was at the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response in New York, engaging with partners and bringing the voice of the global veterinary profession to the discussion.

WVA submitted a statement highlighting critical steps needed for prevention and preparedness implementation.
Pandemic prevention starts before a health emergency begins. Animal health and veterinary services are an essential part of that prevention.

🌍 WVA at the UN General Assembly: Advancing Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response

Tomorrow the WVA will be at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPPR) in New York. 🇺🇳
With the proposed Political Declaration, attention needs to turn to what its commitments mean in practice.

WVA’s participation builds on our collective engagement since 2021, working with veterinary organisations and One Health partners to ensure that animal health and veterinary services are recognised as essential to pandemic prevention. 🐾🩺

At UNGA, WVA will continue bringing the collective voice of the global veterinary profession to the PPPR agenda — advocating for prevention at source, strong veterinary services, surveillance, biosecurity, a skilled workforce, and meaningful implementation of One Health. 🔎🛡️🤝

Pandemic prevention starts before a health emergency begins — and animal health is an essential part of that prevention. 🐾🌍

🌍 WVA welcomes two new members!

We are delighted to welcome the Veterinary Association of India (VAI) and the World Buiatrics Association (WBA) to the World Veterinary Association.

🇮🇳 VAI contributes to animal health, animal welfare, public health and the many challenges at the intersection of veterinary medicine, food systems and One Health.

🐄 WBA brings specialised international expertise in buiatrics, strengthening collaboration around the health, welfare and productivity of cattle and other ruminants — areas that are fundamental to food security, sustainable agriculture, rural livelihoods and public health.

Their membership strengthens the WVA’s global network and creates new opportunities for professional exchange, scientific cooperation, policy dialogue and joint action.

Welcome to the WVA, VAI and WBA! 🌎🐾
