Did you know that all horses - big and small - benefit from regular dental checkups? 🐴✨
This handsome patient recently had to have an infected molar extracted. When you see how large a molar is in proportion to the head, it’s no surprise that dental problems can have a major impact.
For the smallest horses, the risk is often even greater. Their teeth are not much smaller than those of large horses, yet they have to fit into a much smaller mouth. That means:
🔹 less space within the jaw
🔹 a higher risk of misaligned teeth
🔹 teeth that don’t occlude properly
🔹 an increased risk of gingivitis and dental infections
Horses often don’t show signs of pain until problems have become advanced. Reduced feed intake, quidding (dropping partially chewed feed), weight loss, bad breath, or behavioral changes can be signs.
👉 An annual dental checkup (and for some horses, even every six months) can prevent many problems. Preventive care is always better than having to intervene once pain or inflammation has already set in.
Give your horse - pony or mini - a healthy mouth. A small mouth deserves at least as much attention as a large one 💛
“My foal hasn’t stood yet”
There are many reasons why a foal can’t get up after it is born. One of them is a flexural limb deformity, like in this foal.
This little c**t came in with “ballerina feet”, with the left front leg the worst affected. He received medication, bandages and a splint, and help with nursing until he could do it all on his own 💪
👉 It’s extremely important to pay attention to any kind of limb deformities, since there are more treatment options early on.
Foals that can’t stand from birth may get weak and develop other problems like failure of passive transfer.
With timely and appropriate intervention, the foal can continue growing normally and happily!
💡 Laryngeal hemiplegia, commonly known as “roaring”, is a condition caused by damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. This leads to paralysis of the muscle responsible for opening the airway during exercise.
👉 Due to reduced airflow, this condition is a common cause of respiratory noise during exercise and can significantly impact your horse’s performance.
🌟 At Equine Clinic De Morette, we always perform first a thorough diagnostic evaluation to assess the severity of the condition and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your horse. Then we typically perform a standing procedure combined with a laser surgery. In most cases general anesthesia is not necessary.
🎥 In this video, we performed a standing tie-back surgery combined with a laser ventriculocordectomy. These procedures improve airflow, allowing horses to breathe more freely and return to optimal performance. ✨

Last week, our equine dentistry specialist Elke Pollaris had the honor of attending the EVDA (Equine Veterinary Dental Association) Congress in Brighton, UK 🇬🇧
Elke was invited to present on the most common complications following dental extractions in horses and to join an expert panel discussion on this topic, as well as other fascinating subjects such as infundibular restorations and diastemata.
It was an inspiring and highly engaging congress, set in a beautiful location — with a memorable dinner at the Sea Life Centre as the perfect finishing touch! 🤩

A horse’s incisors can wear unevenly due to pain in the molars?
👉 When a horse is in pain, it will often avoid using one side of its mouth while chewing. As a result, the front incisors no longer wear evenly, leading to a diagonal bite.
💡 In this case, the horse was in pain due to a broken and inflamed molar. After this tooth was removed, the horse was able to chew normally again — and with a bit of help, the incisors can also become nicely straight again.

☑️ Applicants have to be European citizen and they must be DVM or have an equivalent degree in Veterinary Medicine.
👉What does it mean to do an internship?
✔️An internship is a practical training program where graduated vets can apply their theoretical knowledge and strengthen their clinical skills.
✔️The intern will assist under the direction of our recognised specialists. He/she will participate in providing medical and surgical clinical services as well as everyday emergency care.
✔️The program is a recognised "rotating" internship and the intern will be exposed to various disciplines (radiology, anesthesiology, internal medicine, surgery, dentistry, orthopedics)
