💙📊 From research to results: a milestone for Plan di Mayor Aruba
In 2020, we started with a question: How can we better protect children when their parents separate?
Before the introduction of the LV Voortgezet Ouderschap en Zorgvuldige Scheidingen, researchers from the University of Aruba and Utrecht University conducted a baseline study, which included an analysis of cases at the Gerecht in Eerste Aanleg (GEA).
The GEA baseline data for 2020–2023 showed that only a small number of parenting plans were being recorded each year — an average of approximately 7.5 per year.

Then, on 1 March 2024, the new legislation came into effect and Plan di Mayor began putting the law into practice: supporting parents, mediating conflict and helping families make concrete agreements centred around their children.

And look at what Plan di Mayor itself has achieved since then:
🔹 2024 — 33 parenting plans realised
🔹 2025 — 67 parenting arrangements realised, including 16 through Parallel Solo Ouderschap
🔹 2026 — already 43 to date, including 12 through Parallel Solo Ouderschap

These figures are Plan di Mayor’s intervention results and should therefore not be interpreted as GEA court statistics. But when placed alongside the baseline, they show just how much has changed in the support now available to parents and children on Aruba.
Behind every number is a family.
Behind every parenting plan are parents who made agreements about their children despite their separation.
And behind every intervention is our belief that a relationship can end, but parenthood continues. 💙

We are especially proud that Parallel Solo Ouderschap has given us an additional route for complex and high-conflict cases where conventional mediation or cooperative co-parenting is not feasible.
This is why we invested not only in legislation, but also in research, trained professionals, interventions and implementation.

And we are not finished. We continue to measure our work, evaluate our interventions and conduct follow-up research to determine whether these changes are also improving outcomes for children and families.

Today, Plan di Mayor would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to our external mediator Marlene van Putten, who stepped away from enjoying her very well-deserved retirement to once again share her time, experience and expertise with us.

Marlene assisted Plan di Mayor by mediating between parents going through a divorce, helping them move beyond their differences and focus on what matters most: their children. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Through her guidance, the parents were able to reach agreements and establish a parenting plan before their divorce, creating greater clarity, stability and predictability for their children during a period of major change.

Marlene, thank you for answering our call when we needed you. Thank you for your professionalism, your calm presence, and above all, your continued commitment to families and children in Aruba.

Retirement may be well deserved… but we are very grateful that you still make a little time for Plan di Mayor! 😉💙

🌈 A new intervention tool for our conversations with children

Plan di Mayor has added Colors of Our Heart to the intervention tools we use during our conversations with children.

This creative method, designed by Wilga Zibel, helps children express and explore their feelings in a safe, playful and accessible way. Through colors and visual materials, children are supported in finding words for what is happening in their hearts—especially when emotions are difficult to explain.

Every child deserves to feel heard, understood and taken seriously. With Colors of Our Heart, we can connect even more closely with their experiences and ensure that their voices remain central to the support we provide to families.

At Plan di Mayor, we continue to invest in child-friendly, evidence-informed approaches that strengthen the well-being of children and their families. 💛💚💙💜❤️

🌟 Celebrating two years of Michelmira at Plan di Mayor Aruba! 🌟

Two years ago, Michelmira began her journey with us as an intern. What started as an opportunity to learn soon grew into something much greater. Through her dedication, creativity and genuine commitment to children and families, she became an invaluable part of Plan di Mayor.

Michelmira did not simply stay—she grew, contributed and helped shape the KIES intervention on Aruba. From coordinating activities and supporting KIES coaches to bringing the voices and experiences of children into everything we do, her impact can be seen and felt throughout our work.

Her journey reminds us that an internship can be the beginning of something truly meaningful when talent meets opportunity, purpose and perseverance.

Dear Michelmira, thank you for believing in our mission and for giving so much of yourself to help children and young people navigate the challenges of divorce and separation. We are proud of everything you have accomplished and excited to see how your journey will continue.
