Late last term, we were fortunate to welcome olive industry expert Dom Scarfo from Diana Olives to Willunga High School to share his knowledge and experience with our students and staff.

Dom visited one of our Year 7 classes, whose students helped pick the olives that went on to become our award winning table olives. He shared his knowledge of olive growing and production, along with the fascinating history of olives and the olive industry in South Australia.

Students learnt that olives have a long history in our state, dating back to the earliest years of European settlement. By the late 1800s, olive growing had become an established industry around Adelaide. They also discovered that olive oil was historically used for medicinal purposes, as well as in pharmaceuticals, soap making and other industries.

Dom then spent time assessing our school olive grove, sharing practical advice about tree health, pruning and management, and how we can rejuvenate the grove to improve its health and productivity into the future.

A huge thank you to Dom for generously sharing his time and expertise. Opportunities like this connect our students with local industry, South Australian agricultural history and authentic hands on learning, while helping us continue to develop our school agriculture program. 🫒🌱

In week 10 last term, a group of Year 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to support the wonderful Japanese Moon Lantern Festival held at Willunga Primary School.🏮

The festival was a huge success, and we were thrilled to be involved in such a vibrant community celebration of Japanese culture. Our Willunga High School students played an important role in the event by assisting with calligraphy activities, helping younger students and community members explore the art of Japanese writing. 🇯🇵

Our students demonstrated enthusiasm, patience, and leadership throughout the evening and were excellent ambassadors for Willunga High School. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented our school and contributed to the success of this special community event. 👏

In week 9 last term, our Year 9 cohort enjoyed our annual excursion to Himeji Gardens, the Japanese shops, and the Adelaide Central Market for an authentic taste of Japanese culture. 🇯🇵

Students had the opportunity to explore the beautiful gardens, experience elements of traditional and contemporary Japanese life, and sample a variety of foods. 🍜

The group thoroughly enjoyed the day and represented the school with pride.

Our 2026 Japanese Exchange trip is officially over, and what a fantastic trip it was!

Here’s a little look at what our crew got up to in Tokyo before heading home.

After arriving last Tuesday afternoon, the group headed straight to the Pokémon Store, a Hedgehog Café and then got to experience the famous Shibuya Crossing and the chaos of the city! 🦔 The students also took turns planning, navigating and organising their train trips and directing the group around Tokyo on this day. A fantastic opportunity to build some real world skills, and they did an amazing job! 🚆

Wednesday didn’t quite go to plan thanks to the weather (thanks, Typhoon Dujuan! 🌧️). After visiting Tokyo Skytree but missing out on the views thanks to the clouds, the group headed to a Robot Café. The café provides employment opportunities for people with severe physical disabilities, ALS and other conditions that can make it difficult or impossible for them to leave their homes. The robots are operated remotely using computers, tablets, eye tracking technology and subtle head movements. This type of work gives people living with disabilities the opportunity to earn an income, connect with other people and participate in the workforce, while working from an environment that suits their individual needs. It was a really interesting experience for our students and a great example of how technology can help create opportunities and greater independence. They then finished their trip with a session at teamLab! ✨

And just like that… they’re home! 🇦🇺 What an incredible few weeks it has been. We can’t wait for the next one! 🇯🇵

Our Stage 2 Child Studies students have recently visited Willunga Primary School & Madge Sexton Kindergarten, putting their learning into practice through hands on experiences with younger children. 👧🧒

Students have worked hard to research the importance of cultural awareness in classroom settings, as well as the role of self-regulation skills in supporting children’s wellbeing and positive relationships. 🧠

They then used their new knowledge to design and implement engaging activities for their younger buddies. 🎨

These experiences provide our students with valuable opportunities to apply their learning, develop their communication skills, and reflect on the needs of young children.

A big thank you to Willunga Primary School and Madge Sexton Kindergarten for their ongoing collaboration and for providing our students with these meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. 🌻
