German Shepherd Rescue Victoria
We are passionate about rescuing and rehoming German Shepherd dogs. German Shepherd Rescue Victoria Inc. How does our process work? How do we make this happen?
is a registered charity consisting of a passionate group of people dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming of German Shepherds. We are a not for profit organisation consisting solely of volunteers who donate their time and energy to the cause. Our network is made up of volunteer workers in areas such as:
• Transportation
• Foster care
• Dog training/ dog behaviourists
• Groomers
• Administrators
• Fundraisers and/ or individuals who donate. Once a dog is legally in our care we we will transport the dog to the foster care volunteer who will care for and provide a variety of necessary care/ requirements until the rescue dog is adopted out into a suitable new home. Our rescue pays for all food, beds, collars, leads and veterinary treatment while the dog is in the care of the foster care volunteer. Our Rescue will also cover costs associated de-sexing, micro chipping vaccination as well as the organisation for the treatment to take place. We rely heavily on volunteers and foster care volunteers, we can never have enough and without the kindness and generosity of these people we could not do the work we do. Just like any charitable organisation we rely on food donations for our foster care volunteers to feed the dogs in their care as well as on monetary donations to not only pay for the veterinary care and treatment but also to help support transportation costs for the rescue dogs into the care of the foster care volunteer or into their new adopted homes.

💚 𝗔𝗩𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗗𝗢𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 💚
Kira is a beautiful almost 5-year-old long stock coat German Shepherd who is ready to find her forever home. Kira was in the pound for a very long time where she was stressed and overwhelmed; she has spent the last month in foster care decompressing and reintegrating into life in a home, she is now looking for her special human that will love her unconditionally.
Kira loves to snuggle on the bed and the couch; she wants to be wherever her humans are and is a typical German Shadow. Kira can be little overstimulated when first meeting new people and is still learning manners, she ultimately just wants to be friends and once she feels safe and comfortable, loves a pat and chest scratch! We are looking for a home where everyone is over the age of 8 years old.
Kira has been spoiled in foster care and has well and truly become accustomed to a princess lifestyle that most dogs can only dream of, she loves her outings for puppacinos and adventure and travels beautifully in the car. Kira doesn’t enjoy being left alone and panics when her humans first leave, she is looking for a home with someone home most of the time, or where she can go with you.
Kira is a clever girl who knows her basic commands, she is a quick learner and is motivated by both treats and toys, she will often self-play squeaking her toys as loud as she can; she is an absolute goofball who can be very silly and oozes cheekiness.
Kira has been working hard on her manners and impulse control, she has been going to group training to practise being calm around other dogs and is doing well, her reactivity to other dogs has already significantly reduced. Kira would thrive attending further obedience classes, her continued progress will be dependent on the effort her new human is willing to put into her.
Kira is worried about other dogs and will sometimes bark and lunge when she sees them, she ignores them at a distance and has been getting closer without a reaction, however, still tends to panic when dogs are too close and will lash out. Kira is easy to distract and re-engages with her handler beautifully, she is learning that her humans will keep her safe and make good decisions on her behalf.
Kira will need to keep her distance from other dogs, her goal is to keep calm and ignore, not to meet them, she is much happier in the company of humans. Kira will need to be the only dog in her new home and is looking for a human who understands how to manage her environment and advocate for her need for distance. Kira has a high prey drive and is not suited to a home with cats or other small animals.
Kira loves splashing in her paddling pool or chasing the hose; she loves to play, do zoomies, roll in the grass, hide her treats like buried treasure in the most random places, and be a dork in general. This girl has many quirks and will constantly have you smiling at how much she enjoys life and how happy she is despite her rough start.
Kira has already come so far, she is a completely different dog to the one we met in the shelter and is learning and growing every day. She is now ready to find a special human of her own, someone who will share their world, love her unconditionally and appreciate the beautiful simple moments of everyday life with a gorgeous floofy girl by their side.
If you wish to adopt Kira, please complete an adoption application via our website www.gsrv.com.au or email [email protected] if you are already on our waiting list.

IS BIARN YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND?
Biarn is a beautiful 7-month-old boy who has a rough start, recently finding himself at risk of euthanasia in a rural pound. Biarn has been in foster care the past few days but is not getting along with the male dogs in the home, we are looking for a foster or foster to adopt home for Biarn.
Biarn can be a little shy at first, however once he has realised that people can be kind, he has latched onto humans and is an affectionate sweetheart that just wants to be loved. Biarn adores his humans and is happiest when he is by their side.
Biarn is a big puppy, and whilst he knows his basic commands, has perfected toilet training and is quickly learning leash manners, he can still show puppy-like behaviours such as jumping up and mouthing when he is overexcited or over-stimulated. Biarn is looking for a confident handler that will continue his training and put rules in place, he is entering his teenage era and will test boundaries. Biarn is best suited to a home where everyone is over the age of 12.
Biarn was previously a very frightened pup that was wary of new people and environments; the pound staff and his foster home have done an incredible job of giving Biarn positive experiences, and he is already a different dog, however he could regress over the next few months as he matures and enters his next fear period. We are looking for someone with breed experience that will help Biarn become a confident adult dog, who will put in the work now and get on the front foot with his training and social skills.
Biarn is motivated by both food and toys and enjoys working for treats, he is very clever and only has to be corrected or shown how to do something a few times before it clicks. Biarn would thrive with additional training, attending group obedience classes so that he can work on his socialisation and exposure in a controlled environment would be ideal for this boy.
Biarn is unsure around other male dogs, he becomes very nervous and agitated in their presence, he is much more accepting of female dogs and has done well living with the older female shepherd in his foster home, even accepting corrections from her. Biarn is looking for a home where he can be the only dog, or with a large-breed older female dog. Biarn will need to work on his socialisation around other males overtime, he currently isn’t showing any reactivity out on walks.
Biarn is not suited to a home with cats or other small pets, he has a strong prey drive and fixates on cats.
This sweet boy has become the ultimate cuddle bug that just wants to be with his people and will do anything to be the centre of your world. Biarn has so much potential and in the right hands, will become a confident, loyal companion.
To adopt or foster Biarn, please complete an application via our website www.gsrv.com.au or email [email protected] if you are already on our waiting list.

JAX THE LOYAL LOVEBUG!
Jax is a beautiful 3.5-year-old bi-colour boy who was originally a stray, he has spent the last few months in foster care building his confidence and is more than ready to find his perfect forever family.
Jax is a gorgeous boy who makes friends with everyone, he is affectionate and goofy; once you have his heart, he is the most loyal and loving companion. Jax is a typical German Shadow who always wants to have 1 eye on his people, he will follow you from room to room and is happiest when with his humans, he would prefer to have someone home most of the time.
Jax has tested well with visiting children, he loves to play and follow them around, however he doesn’t always realise his own size and has accidentally knocked smaller children over when playing or trying to give them kisses. When younger kids are very loud, Jax gets a little overwhelmed and will take himself off to bed to escape chaos. Jax would be best suited to a home with children over 5.
Jax loves going for walks and adventures with his foster family; he is quite content with a daily walk, playtime, and a training session here and there. Jax is happy to spend the rest of the day snoozing on his bed and is generally a chilled-out boy. However, don’t be late with his mealtimes… you will hear all about it!
Jax knows his basic commands and a few tricks too, he is very clever and just wants to please his people, his face lights up when he is told he is a good boy. Jax has a decent recall, and his manners are great most of the time, however he can have outbursts of cheekiness and excitement where he will need rules reinforced. Jax is both food and toy motivated, he picks things up easily.
Jax enjoys meeting other dogs out and about and if friendly an excited to meet others, he isn’t super experienced hanging out off lead and can be a little rude with his interactions. Jax may be suited to living with a large breed dog that isn’t afraid to set boundaries, but also who will be happy to play with Jax; he would also be fine as the only dog in his new home.
Jax has not been tested with cats, small pets or livestock.
Jax loves to play with his toys; as his confidence has built, so has his love for toys. Balls, ropes, squeaky and plush toys are all favourites, those and the occasional shoe or slipper! Jax loves to do Zoomies and has very goofy moments where he will ‘superman’ off the back deck.
Jax has such a wonderful temperament, he is easy-going and happy to hang-out but also equally loves playtime and adventures. The one consistent thing that Jax loves the most, is being with his people, he doesn’t care what he is doing so long as he is with the ones he loves.
To adopt Jax, please complete an adoption application via our website www.gsrv.com.au or email [email protected] if you are already on our waiting list.

"The pound is currently at capacity."
"We are rapidly running out of options."
"His time with us is now extremely limited."
"When we are full, the choice gets taken out of our hands."
"He is facing euthanasia early next week."
These are the excerpts from a desperate email we got on Friday from one of the pound attendants at a rural pound, begging for us to please help and take in a very frightened 7 month old boy.
7 months, and facing losing his life before it has even begun, we felt sick to our stomachs, we had to help.
We are not a shelter, we don't have a facility, we rely on foster carers to take dogs in and help us save them.
We become the ones making the desperate calls, finding a suitable foster home "please help us save him" and "can you take him ASAP."
Then come the callouts at the 11th hour to our volunteers to give this boy a long freedom ride to safety, facilitate dog introductions all in the pouring rain. It is never just as simple as saying yes.
Thankfully this time we were able to say Yes, we had an amazing foster family step up, and an incredible volunteer give up their Saturday, we were able to save this boy's life.
We don't know who was more relieved: us, this gorgeous pup, or the pound attendants who were facing having to do the unthinkable because they had run out of room.
This is the scary current state of our animal welfare system; if you don't believe that dogs are being euthanized every day to make room... Wake up!
It's not the pound's or shelter's fault, they are doing the best they can and are beyond desperate to save lives; reaching out to rescues, begging for help, they hate the state of things as much as we do, if not more.
We need more support and help from the government, we desperately need backyard breeding and accidental litters to stop. It's killing us, it's killing them.
How can you help?
Speak up - contact your local MP - put pressure on them before the state election to provide more funding and support for rescue groups.
Share the message - talk to those around you, condemn those who buy from backyard breeders, educate your family, share this post, tag your local MP in rescue call-outs for help. The best way to tackle this issue is prevention, rescue is not the solution but a band-aid to a much bigger problem.
Help a rescue dog directly - Can you foster or adopt? By taking in a dog and helping us get them out of a shelter or free up a foster home, it directly helps save not only that dog but another life by making room.
This time we were able to say yes, but without serious government intervention as well as more foster and adoption homes, that won't always be the case.
Welcome to GSRV Biarn, we hope you never know how close you came to not being here.
You are one of the lucky ones 💔

LUCY IS LOOKING FOR LOVE!
Lucy is a beautiful 2-year-old girl who has had a rough start to her young life; Lucy was found living isolated in a backyard, emaciated and terrified, she was seized and eventually brought into our care so that we could continue her rehabilitation. Lucy has spent the last few months in foster care and is now ready to find her forever home, with a family that will love her unconditionally.
Lucy is a sweet girl who can be shy at first, she warms up to people if they have treats on offer or are willing to play, she then becomes a typical German Shadow who loves to follow her people around the home. Lucy is tolerant of handling; she is happy to come over for a pat or cuddle on her terms but can become overwhelmed if her space and autonomy isn’t respected.
Lucy was originally on a re-feeding program to help her gain weight; she has been working hard on her manners not to sn**ch food and is gentle most of the time. Lucy is still young and can sometimes have excited outbursts resulting in puppy-like behaviours such as mouthing, she would be best suited to a home where everyone is over the age of 5 and will need supervision around children.
Lucy is an active girl who loves to play, fetching her ball is her favourite activity and she would do this all day if we let her. Lucy loves doing Zoomies and enjoys her quiet walks; she is looking for a home where she has a decent yard so that she can run and chase her ball.
Lucy is very clever and has been learning her basic commands, she is now toilet trained and sleeps beautifully through the night on her bed. Lucy’s leash skills are a work in progress, adventuring out into the world is all new for her and she is lacking in confidence. Lucy’s new human will need to be committed to her ongoing socialisation and exposure, taking it slow and steady to ensure she is comfortable.
Lucy is very unsure around other dogs, in her previous ‘home’ she had a bad experience with another dog and can be nervous around them initially. Lucy wants to interact however becomes overwhelmed; she will need to continue having gradual, positive interactions with other dogs. Lucy can sometimes react out of frustration; however, this is not with every dog (sometimes she will simply stop and watch), and she is very easy to distract and re-gain her focus back onto her human.
For now, Lucy is best suited as the only dog in her new home, if the work is put in to help her gain confidence and have positive experiences, Lucy may be able to live with another dog in future.
Lucy has no experience with cats or other small pets, she has learned to ignore livestock at a distance.
Lucy has a lot of potential, despite the awful neglect she has been through, she loves being around her humans and is a playful, happy girl with a beautiful temperament. Lucy is looking for an understanding, patient human that will continue to help bring her out of her shell and give her the life every dog deserves.
To adopt Lucy, please complete an adoption application via our website www.gsrv.com.au or email [email protected] if you are already on our waiting list.

Today is National Police Remembrance Day, a day to remember and honour police members who have lost their lives whilst serving and protecting the community, through illness and other circumstances.
It is also a day to acknowledge Police members who continue to dedicate their lives to keeping us safe, working tirelessly during these challenging times.
We have a wonderful relationship with Victoria Police via the Dog Squad, and are very proud of Hunter, a GSRV Police Dog graduate. We also have many wonderful adopters and volunteers who are Police members.
Today is about honouring those who have fallen, those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We acknowledge the heartbreak of the families and colleagues left behind and stand beside them as we thank those lost in the line of duty for their service.
Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, we will remember them.
