💜 Community Conversations: Supporting Our Daughters 💬

On Tuesday evening, Killester parents and teachers came together for the first of our Community Conversation series, exploring “Helping Your Daughter Navigate Challenges in a Changing World”. 🌏

Parents shared their hopes for their daughters to be happy, resilient and successful learners with strong friendships and the confidence to achieve their goals. Discussions also explored challenges facing young people today, including social media, Artificial Intelligence, teenage identity, resilience and friendships. 💭🤝

The evening provided a valuable opportunity for families and staff to connect and strengthen the partnership between home and school. 💜 Feedback from the conversation will help shape our next session in Term 4, which will again be open to all parents.

Our Year 10–12 team took out 1st place in the Division D Groups Competition, a fantastic achievement and wonderful recognition of their hard work, commitment and teamwork. 🥇✨

Mercy Moves Us. Justice Calls Us. 💙

Killester staff gathered at Scots’ Church in Melbourne for our Staff Faith Formation Day on Friday 21st August, taking time together to explore our 2026 theme of Justice through three important principles of Catholic Social Teaching — Dignity, Solidarity and Compassion.

Dr Gavin Brown led us through the story of the Good Samaritan. He challenged us to recognise that, at different moments in our lives, we can find ourselves in each person in the story. The one who is vulnerable, the one who walks past, the one who notices and, ultimately, the one who chooses to stop and respond. The challenge of the Gospel is to keep journeying towards the words of Jesus: “Go and do likewise.”

We then had the privilege of hearing from speakers from The Big Issue - Ray and Helen, who generously shared their stories and experiences of homelessness and vulnerability. Their stories invited us to listen with compassion, challenge assumptions and recognise the dignity of every person.

Staff then took to the streets of Melbourne for the Big City Search Challenge, experiencing our city through a different lens and gaining a deeper understanding of some of the everyday barriers faced by people experiencing homelessness.

Returning to Scots’ Church, we took time for reflection and contemplation. Through the lenses of Dignity – SEE, Solidarity – CONNECT and Compassion – RESPOND, we considered what we had seen, what we had come to understand and how we are now called to respond.

Finally, our reflections became our prayer. Each group contributed their own words, bringing our experiences together into one Killester community prayer. a prayer of gratitude, dignity, solidarity and compassion

May we see differently, walk together and have the courage to respond.

🔬🧪 Celebrating Science Week 🌱🌸

Last week, students celebrated Science Week with a series of fun and interactive lunchtime activities designed to spark curiosity, encourage discovery and bring science to life! 🔍✨

🌱 Monday – Amazing Seeds/Grains
Students examined a fascinating variety of seeds and grains in petri dishes using magnifying glasses, getting up close to explore their different shapes, sizes and textures.

🌸 Tuesday – Flower Dissection
Students carefully dissected and deconstructed Clivia flowers before putting their scientific knowledge to the test by reconstructing them and identifying as many flower parts as possible. 🔬🌺

💡 Wednesday – Science Kahoot!
Science Week wrapped up with a lively lunchtime Kahoot, with plenty of friendly competition and prizes awarded to our top three science whizzes! 🏆👏

A fantastic week of investigating, experimenting and discovering - proving that science is all around us! 🧬🌏💜

Important Dates – Remote Learning & Staff Faith Day

Please note the following arrangements for Thursday 20 August and Friday 21 August:

💻 Thursday 20 August – Remote Learning Day
All students will participate in their scheduled classes online from home. Students are expected to log in to each class at the usual timetabled times and engage in learning throughout the day.

📚 Friday 21 August – Staff Faith Day
As staff will be participating in a College Faith Formation Day, all students will complete an independent (self-directed) learning day from home. Students are encouraged to use this time to complete set learning tasks, revise classwork and continue with assessment preparation as directed by their teachers.

We thank families for their support and cooperation and look forward to welcoming all students back on campus on Monday 24 August.

👩‍🍳🏅 Today four Year 11 VET Cookery students: May N, Diana P, Chau N and Rose K competed in the SEGAP Teen Chef competition - an annual culinary event for high school students in the South Eastern Girls Activity Program (SEGAP) network in Victoria. 🍽️ Inspired by MasterChef, student teams are given 90 minutes to cook a main dish and a dessert, which are judged by professional chefs from the Australian Culinary Federation. ⏱️👨‍🍳

The Killester students faced fierce competition from Kilbreda, Sacred Heart and OLSH and while they were not the overall winners they came away with a gold medal for their efforts. 🥇✨ To receive a gold medal students had to have received a score of between 90-99/100 for their dishes which is an incredible achievement. 👏 Their two dishes were Char Siu Chicken with handmade noodles and seasonal vegetables 🍜🥬 and Chocolate fondant with dragon fruit puree, coconut and lime chantilly cream and cacao nib crumble 🍫🍰 were very highly commended.

These students represented Killester with strength, kindliness and professionalism and are to be congratulated for their culinary efforts. 💜🌟 A huge thanks to Lucy Collins, Mark Pudney and Georgie McLean who were integral to today's success. 🙏👏

❄️ WINTER SLEEPOUT | Dignity • Solidarity • Compassion 🕯️

60 students and 16 staff came together for our Vinnies Winter Sleepout, sleeping in solidarity with people experiencing homelessness and taking time to learn, reflect, pray and act.

Throughout the evening, students explored the importance and meaning of home with Vinnies and participated in a Finding Shelter sleeping-rough simulation, sitting in different outdoor areas of the College and reflecting on what it might mean to face a night without warmth, security or a safe place to call home.

We were privileged to hear from speakers from Wayss Dandenong, who helped us understand the many faces of homelessness within the City of Greater Dandenong and reminded us that homelessness does not always look the way we might expect.

Our evening also included prayer and reflection for people experiencing different forms of homelessness. We shared a simple dinner of soup and bread, similar to a meal served from a Vinnies Soup Van, and students prepared care packages for Vinnies to distribute through their Soup Van program.

Together, we raised an incredible $1,231 for the Vinnies Winter Appeal. 💙

After a cold night, everyone was welcomed with a hot egg and bacon breakfast before students and staff headed into Friday classes — perhaps with a deeper appreciation of the warmth, safety and security of home.

One night cannot replicate the experience of homelessness, but it can open our eyes, challenge our assumptions and inspire us to make a difference.

🌟 Year 8 Transition Leaders Making an Impact! 🌟

Our Year 8 Transition Leaders have been visiting our feeder primary schools to discuss information about transition to secondary school and the exciting opportunities available next year in Year 7! 🎒✏️

Selected current Year 7 students have been attending these visits with a leader to share their insights into the phases of transition, including developing friendships 🤝, involvement in school activities 🎭⚽, and navigating the timetable and subject learning 📚.

The feeder schools encompass a large area including schools in Cranbourne, Clyde North, Officer, Oakleigh, Keysborough, Glen Waverley, Springvale and Dingley 🗺️.

Our Flying Solo program focuses on students attending Killester on their own from primary school. The visits enable these students to meet their leader mentors who will ensure they have a positive experience during their Flying Solo days ✈️💙.

The leaders spoke about challenges they faced in the lead-up to starting the term and how settled they now are with school routines - showing our Year 6 students that it's okay to feel nervous, and that support is there every step of the way 💛.
