This week marks six years since the freeze on Medicare rebates was finally lifted for many scans including X-ray, CT, MRI and Ultrasound after a long and gruelling lobbying campaign by ADIA.

The amount patients receive back from Medicare for these services is now increasing in recognition of rising costs – a slow but steady improvement that is critical in making radiology more accessible and affordable.

This year’s Federal Budget has once again failed to address the critical Medicare funding shortfall facing women’s imaging.

Despite identifying “gender bias in the rates of Medicare rebates” as an issue two years ago, the Federal Government is yet to take meaningful action on this issue – and it’s Australian women who will pay the price as they pay more for scans throughout pregnancy or breast cancer treatment.
