Attention all Secondary Colleges, Private Schools, and Primary schools in the Altona area. The Altona Sports Club has now established a Junior Lawn Bowls Academy within the club. The Academy will be conducting a massive junior coaching/recruitment program within the local Altona 5km radius. This program hopes to teach students the skills of how to play Lawn Bowls. Schools will be offered the opportunity to introduce all pupils from year level 7 -11 coaching lessons FREE of COST to expose the hidden talent skills in the age-old sport of bowls. The sport now for all ages as people and students have seen on TV with the UBC or BPL series which have been shown. Any young students or Schools that may be interested. The idea is not to steal you from your primary sport but introduce Lawn Bowls as a secondary sport because very little junior sport is played on a Saturday afternoon. Can and give it a try you never know your hidden TALENT may have you playing for Victoria Under 18 State team in 12 months or so. What an achievement that would be.

Australia/ State wide talent identification program.
The introduction of the ultimate fun Junior Lawn Bowls recruitment proposal to Education Department- Sports Victoria, Bowls Australia, Bowls Victoria, Bowls SA, Bowls NSW, Bowls ACT, Bowls WA, Bowls Tasmania and Bowls Queensland.
The Young Australians Lawn Bowls Academy would like in conjunction with Bowls Australia staff which includes National Participation Manager, Regional Bowls Managers, State Bowls Associations and Australian senior/ development squad members to become involved in a massive junior recruitment drive.
The program is to involve selected Private Colleges, Secondary Colleges and Primary schools close to bowling clubs to establish junior recruitment programs plus formation of Lawn Bowls Academies throughout metropolitan and country regions of Australia.
The scheduled school coaching programs will be programmed by Young Australians Lawn Bowls Academy plus hopefully including Bowls Australia or State Association’s participation staff properly trained in coaching system throughout State regions whether in metropolitan or country Australia.
The Young Australians Lawn Bowls Academy coaches, plus hopefully Bowls Australia and State Association personnel in a 52 week yearly cycle with high schools and private colleges could conduct 40 one weekly program or 20 two weekly coaching /talent finding programs during school terms nationwide.
Program schedule
1. Public school administrator or senior sports co-coordinator will be contacted by the Academy plus hopefully Bowls Australia or State Associations to work out timetable to allow students, boys and girls from schools between 1-3 km from local Bowls Club to be coached in the skills and delivery of lawn bowls. The age of students will be 12-18 from year levels 7-12 at Secondary colleges or Private schools. Primary schools year 5- 6 students to be included.
2. The year level class sizes will be 25-30 students for coaching sessions.
3. The time length of coaching sessions will be between 60- 75 minutes with hopefully 2-4 sessions per day.
4. School sports clothing, flat soled runners, shoes or bare feet will be used for new bowlers.
5. All students will be informed of the reasons why they have been instructed in the skills of the game of lawn bowls.
6. After school coaching will be conducted 3-5 days per week between the times of 3.30 -6.30 pm, if lights are available sessions will be longer, while Academy staff, are conducting their talent finding programs.
7. During or after coaching sessions potentially talented students will be instructed to report to the sports administrator or player mentor to have their names and details e.g. address, age, year level class, and also other sporting interests taken so staff can build up lists of interested parties.
8. Talented or interested students will be informed of coaching and training timetables and sessions as soon as possible, depending on their availability.
9. Advanced coaching sessions will also be conducted on selected weekends on grass greens or the newly constructed artificial Indoor bowling stadium.
10. Bowls sporting equipment if required can be ordered through Academy staff on request. Henselite Australia has provided a list of special equipment prices for the formation of this very large new development program.
11. Young Australians Lawn Bowls Academy will lay the foundation for the formation of the Club Junior Academy with coaching from BA Advanced Coach Richard Gale or BA Club coaches. All coaches have “Working with Children Certificates”.
12. It is YALBA’s and the Club’s Junior Academy mission to establish the grassroots training schedules in new player’s delivery techniques, bowls knowledge and training drills.
13. A groundbreaking scholarship program will be established with major sponsors being able to become involved in the long term.
14. The mission of coaching 150,000 students over the next four years from public schools all over the local regions or bowls zones will be put in motion. This will increase the badly needed junior memberships and family units of the clubs.
15. YALBA, plus Bowls Club and Association administration staff must have an effective line of communication, to ensure the effective coordination of the public schools involved with the recruiting drive amongst local region students. This will be the biggest undertaking in junior development in lawn bowls that Australia will ever see and if formulated the right way will establish the local Academy as a powerhouse in Junior Lawn Bowls development throughout the State over the next decade.
16. Corporate social bowls have become an excellent way of recruiting new
members to the world of lawn bowls. It has also created a money-making
event for bowling clubs to survive. While this program is being conducted coaching will also be offered to student’s parents, brothers, and sisters. This will allow the family to possibly become a bowling unit.
17. Following the completion of the four-year extensive training and coaching programs under the guidance of YALBA‘s Bowls Australia Advanced Coach- Mr. Richard or B.A Association Club Coaches, we hope to increase membership of each bowls club to one hundred juniors with a projection of possible three hundred new juniors with maximum effort from programs at schools.
18. The young boys and girls developed from this Academy can look forward to competing in the State Association Pennant season plus events like State juniors or adult Championships. This could lead on to playing in the Australian Open or even be picked to represent your State at Under 18 State events or Junior Australian Championships.
19. YALBA, plus hopefully Bowls Australia and State Associations would anticipate this major coaching and development program would start operation in February 2021 hopefully after coronavirus chaos restrictions are lifted. This allows 4 years of coaching to be conducted on scheduled weekends or possible weeknight during holidays on local greens or Indoor Stadium under lights.
School coaching session’s timetable proposed coaching numbers.
In a one week program, 500 students will be put through coaching and skills training, this allows 3 - 4 one to one and a half-hour coaching classes per day of 25 students. After school coaching sessions between 3.30pm – 6.30pm every weekday will also be conducted, where we may have a return average of another 125 students per week.
In a two week program, 1000 - 1250 students will be put through delivery coaching and skills training. After school coaching between 3.30pm – 6.30pm will have the return of another 250 students this includes training during weekends on Saturday and Sunday of the middle weekend.
The retention rate of between 5 - 7 % of students as players over the two-week program with full-time training after school has been very successful with programs conducted between the years 2003 – 2017.
This has worked very successfully at MCC Kew Sports Club with the program coaching over 6000 students from St Kevin’s College, Xavier College, and Camberwell Grammar Boys and Girls, Trinity Grammar, Carey College, Genazzano Girls College and Deepdene Primary School over the last 2 Years.
The YALBA staff members had coached 6000 students over the last twenty-four months at the club in lead up to the 2015-17 Bowls Victoria School Pennant competitions.
This retention rate could be as much as 12-15% if the clubs would allow total saturation during bowls program where they try and promote a family fun day plus Bowls Distributor demonstration day during middle weekend of a two-week program.
The club would conduct a family BBQ, entertainment for both members, new junior players plus their families and friends.
Local media advertising of a “Lawn Bowls OPEN Day” could also be conducted for the community this weekend to also help with the recruitment of new members.
During coaching programs in NSW, the clubs involved restricted the recruitment numbers because coaching staff and administration were unable to handle any more than 30 new juniors.
This caused the culling of many potentially highly talented new recruits of which we had 150 - 200 new young bowlers from most after school training sessions.
YALBA’s fully operational program over 40 weeks has the opportunity to recruit 1400 – 3500 new junior bowlers per year with one experience Advanced Coach plus help from Bowls Australia Regional Bowls Manager/Qualified Coach and/or one trainee coach or Australian squad member.
This will allow the training of possible new coaching mentors or future coaching team members in all states.
The other eight weeks of school holidays can be used to conduct specially coordinated regional and metropolitan advanced skills and coaching BOOT CAMP’s where a talented student could develop their newly found bowling skills.
This would possibly allow Bowls Australia staff / High Performance- NTC personal and Associations junior coaching staff to access future talent throughout Australia.
If in the future Bowls Australia and State Association’s with YALBA’s early coach mentoring set up could introduce training and coaching schedules where the numbers of recruitment- coaching teams in each State were operating like detailed above.
The establishment of the Junior Academy in conjunction with the local Bowls Club will offer a far-reaching sports specific development program into the game of lawn bowls.
The local college or private school will offer LAWN BOWLS as a curriculum or elective sport.
Lawn bowls is a major core sport at the Commonwealth Games and are played at World Championship levels held recently last November 2012 in Adelaide. The sport is also played at the Youth Commonwealth Games, open to all secondary college students every four years.
The main objectives we aim to achieve are:
· Conduct a major talent finding activity.
· Teach students of all cultures this highly skilled sport in all aspects of the sport e.g. Delivery technique, shot play skills, tactical skills, and mental game skills.
· Ensure that all talented athletes are given opportunities to develop and excel at various levels in the sport.
· Allow students to develop and become future high-level coaches within the campus.
· Development of a strong after school program to keep students off the streets seven days per week.
· Development of team-building skills, etiquette, and social behavior.
· Increasing school attendance and retention rates.
· Strengthening student engagement with school and improving attitudes to schooling.
· Improving general skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication skills.
· Increased opportunities for post-school pathways and employment as coaches or sports coordinators.
· Improving the health and well being of students and confidence.
· Improving parental and community involvement as a family unit with the school and children’s education.
· Promote and support positive learning experiences that fosters success.
· Possible interstate or overseas travel to represent your state or country.
· Play a highly-skilled non-contact sport for all ages.
The students exposed to our sport could be massive. Recruitment page for possible year one, year two, year three, year four and year five projected recruitment numbers and Lawn Bowls sales can be requested by the club at scheduled meetings.
Transport requirements, sponsorship, and advertising.
If a fully equipped promotional van or 20 seat bus was supplied with Company SIGNAGE and also other sponsors who pay for advertising space as well. This would reduce the running cost of vehicle maintenance wise.
The specially designed narrow lawn bowls trailer will also be towed by the Promotional Van or coach’s vehicle for the storage of all program equipment. This includes 60 sets of speckled/multi-colored bowls between sizes 000 – 3, carry bags, and skills training equipment.

Donvale Bowling Club community OPEN day

The Young Australians lawn Bowls Academy who has conducted large scale junior recruitment programs in NSW from 2003-2008 at Club Merrylands, St Johns Park, Mounties, Port Macquarie City and Warilla Recreation Club with on 20,000 secondary schools students coaching in the skills of Lawn Bowls is now operating on a part time basis. These one, two or three week coaching sessions can be time tabled to suit bowling club and schools interested in development of the sport through sport sessions all over NSW or Victoria.
