There is a common assumption that streaming is automatically more reliable than free-to-air television.
During a tournament like the World Cup, that assumption does not hold up.
Every match this year airs free-to-air across SBS and SBS Viceland, with SBS On Demand also available for streaming.
A free-to-air broadcast has a real advantage during major live events because it does not depend on internet bandwidth or network congestion.
While streaming platforms can buffer or lag when millions of people log on for the same match, a properly functioning antenna delivers a clean signal regardless of how many other households are tuned in.
The only variable is whether your antenna system is actually performing the way it should.
Reception issues build up gradually through weather exposure and ageing components, and most people do not notice until a major broadcast makes the problem obvious.
If your system has not been checked in a while, now is a good time.
We test signal strength and fix whatever is underperforming in a single visit.

104 matches across the tournament and apparently zero excuses for missing any of them, since every single one is free to air in Australia this year.
What is the one match on your must-watch list this tournament?

A few quick checks before the next match airs.
Make sure every coaxial connection at the back of your TV and wall plate is fully tightened.
Rescan your channels if reception has felt slightly off recently.
Check whether the issue is happening across every channel or just on SBS specifically, since that tells you a lot about where the fault actually is.
Still patchy after that? A professional signal test will pinpoint exactly what is going on.

Worth knowing before the World Cup gets into full swing.
SBS and SBS Viceland are broadcasting every single match free to air, with SBS On Demand covering live streaming for anyone watching on a device. No subscription required for any of it.
The catch is that free-to-air quality depends entirely on your antenna setup.
Wind, rain and ageing connections all chip away at signal strength over time, often without being obvious until a big broadcast exposes it.
A quick test now is the easiest way to avoid finding out mid-match.

If you are renovating right now this is the conversation worth having with your builder or electrician before the walls get closed up.
Running antenna cabling and TV points through open walls is a fraction of the time and cost compared to doing it after plasterboard is up, set and painted. Chasing cables through finished walls means cutting, patching and repainting. In a room that has just been freshly painted that is nobody's preferred outcome.
The same applies to wall mount preparation. Getting the right backing board installed between studs during the build gives you a solid mounting surface at exactly the right height for the screen size and room layout you are planning. Doing it after the walls are closed means either working with whatever studs happen to be in the right place or adding backing through the finished wall surface.
TV point placement is worth thinking through room by room before the rough in stage. Where will furniture actually sit. Where will the TV be. Is there going to be a screen in the outdoor area. Does the bedroom need a point. Will the study need one. Getting all of this into the rough in scope while the walls are open costs very little and saves a significant amount of work later.
We work with homeowners and builders during the renovation stage to get antenna cabling, TV points and wall mount preparation done properly before it becomes difficult.
