Art Club: The Cult of Suburbia

In Art Club this Thursday, 27 August, guest speaker Carly Richardson will be discussing how the suburb is reflected in post-war art and culture, looking at works by renowned artists such a Howard Arkley, Jeffrey Smart and David Hockney as well as some lesser-known local artists.

Linking back to the works and practices of David Wadelton, John Gollings, Jon Campbell, Cathy Drummond, Paola Balla, and Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney who feature in our current exhibition; 'Views and Vistas of the Valley', the evolution of suburbia will be considered against changing social and economic priorities.

Carly Richardson is a Museum registrar, collections specialist, arts educator, curator, and currently works at Melbourne University as a Collections Coordinator and a casual Duty Manager and Gallery Assistant at Incinerator Gallery. Carly is interested in providing access to our cultural collections, and is focused on how our social and cultural values are reflected through arts movements and approaches.

Explore the art of glass kiln forming in our six-week studio workshop series, beginning next week.

Glass artist Madeline Cardone will introduce participants to the fundamental techniques of fusing and slumping, with a focus on exploring colour, transparency, surface, form and composition. Through a series of projects, explore how heat and gravity can transform flat glass into sculptural and three-dimensional forms, tableware and wearable pieces, while developing your own creative approach to the material.

Includes basic materials, tools and firing service.

Exhibit in The Atrium at Incinerator Gallery!

We’re calling for artists, curators and collectives to propose an exhibition for the Atrium space, with particular interest in applications that respond to place, consider the circular economy of materiality, and provide a day/night activation of the gallery.

Previous successful applications have included site-specific, sculptural and spatial practices. New works that respond specifically to the site are highly encouraged.

Successful applicants programmed in the Atrium in 2027 will receive:
• A $928 - $1,950 Artist Fee for the exhibition, based on NAVA rates
• 7-10 week exhibition
• Curatorial assistance throughout the development phase
• Professional installation
• Marketing through the Incinerator Gallery and Moonee Valley City Council channels, which can include national arts publication listings, social media and a considered seasonal print and promotional materials campaign.
• Professional exhibition photography
• An Opening Event alongside other exhibitions

“The series continues my documentation of suburban life—its quiet rituals and community spaces. Having lived in nearby Ascot Vale when I first moved to Melbourne in 1975, returning with a camera brings both familiarity and a reminder of the changes to our suburban places over the decades.” - David Wadelton

Established in 1963, the Maribyrnong Park Bowls and Croquet Club ceased operations in 2024 - this photographic series was commissioned to celebrate the Club’s legacy as well as to imagine a regenerative lens to the historical site that has been a significant hub for the local community.

Photographer David Wadleton has captured this vision of late Modernist recreational design, which is now functioning as a time capsule of communal leisure and suburban social life.

Views and Vistas of the Valley is on now, until 31 October

Our current exhibition Views and Vistas of the Valley celebrates the significant building that form the identity and reflect the history of our community.

The schematic drawings for the Essendon Incinerator by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, produced in 1929 reveal Marion Mahony’s exceptional draftsmanship, shaped through her training within the Prairie School of Architecture and the influential ethos of American architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Incinerator building on this site is last of its kind surviving in Victoria and of major architectural significance, protected by the National Trust and Heritage Victoria, and cared for by Moonee Valley City Council.

View these iconic drawings, then walk through the space to experience the heritage and history of the building itself.

Open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am-4pm.

Across our current exhibition, Views and Vistas of the Valley, audiences are invited to consider the ways art can amplify place—its histories, its transformations, its everyday resonances.

This manifests through three intertwined genres of selected works; architecture and design, natural and civic landscape; and people and still-life.

In the genre of people and still-life, artists foreground the intimate and everyday: figures, objects, and scenes that embody personal connection and cultural narrative.

We have an exciting opportunity to bring your art to life as an animated projection. Help us create an immersive evening experience that uses light, projection and storytelling that will become part of two projection tours coming to Moonee Valley this October. Open to emerging artists, illustrators, animators, photographers, filmmakers and creative technologists based in Moonee Valley.

Views and Vistas of the Valley brings together selected works that explore three intertwined genres: architecture and design; natural and civic landscape; and people and still-life. Together, these genres offer multiple vantage points on what it means to live in, look at, and belong to this valley landscape.

Landscape works extend this conversation from the built and domestic environments into natural and municipal space: from depictions of waterways or parks that are sites of recreation and memory, to interpretations of ecological shifts over time.
