We treat smiles at MOG Orthodontics. But that’s rarely the whole story. Straight teeth are usually just the visible part of orthodontic treatment.

A parent once asked us, mid consultation, whether orthodontics was “just cosmetic”. It’s a fair question. From the outside, that’s often how it looks: brackets, wires, elastics and a straighter smile at the end.

But the answer is more interesting than that. The way teeth and jaws are aligned affects how a person chews, how clearly they speak, and even how well they breathe at night. In younger patients, treatment can help guide jaw development while growth is still occurring. In adults, it can reduce the kind of uneven wear that quietly accumulates over decades.

Today, on World Orthodontic Health Day, the World Federation of Orthodontists is asking all of us to move the conversation beyond straight teeth.

Some days, the waiting room is loud. Kids arguing over the chair closest to the window. Parents who've driven across town after school pickup. A teenager pretending not to know any of them.

Families fill our waiting rooms, our appointment books, and most of our best moments at work. Orthodontic appointments are a small, recurring chapter in a much bigger family story. We're glad to be on some of the pages.

ANZAC Day isn't about politics. It's about people - real, young, human people who were asked to do something impossibly hard, and who paid the ultimate price.

Today we stop, as we do every year, to acknowledge that sacrifice - the lives cut short, the families changed forever, the names on memorials in every town across Australia. Not to glorify war, but to honour the weight of that sacrifice.
