To all the residents of Kalorama-Mt Dandenong,
We hope that you have received a flyer inviting you to the free ceremony to award the Kalorama firefighters an individual Unit Citation for Courage for their work on the night of the storms in June 2021.
Our community showed exceptional collaboration and resilience during this time. We would therefore be delighted to see you there to celebrate our collective effort π

Five years after the catastrophic June 9, 2021 storms devastated Kalorama, the mountain community has shown deep resilience while grappling with a long, complex recovery. Over 20,000 trees were uprooted across the Dandenong Ranges by highly unusual, destructive east coast low-pressure winds, leaving the township of Kalorama as one of the hardest-hit "ground zero" locations.
Despite feeling largely isolated from government assistance in the initial chaotic days, the Kalorama and wider Dandenongβs community rallied together, our community spirit was strong. Neighbours supported one another by setting up impromptu hubs, sharing generators, and offering meals, cementing a powerful legacy of local camaraderie and support that remains five years later.
