Hard to believe while it's cold and wet, but the BOM is predicting a "𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐥 𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐨" this summer, with climatologists using phrases like "mind blowing", "outside the envelope of anything we've observed", and "one for the record books". 🥵 Ouch.
Now is the time to be thinking about how to save water at home, not in the height of summer when it's already in short supply.
Check out our two free water workshops, with practical advice on water-saving technology for showers and bathrooms, and how to design tanks and watering systems.

Most raked and cathedral ceilings are significantly under-insulated, which means heat pouring out in winter and flooding in during summer. The good news is it's fixable.
There are two main options to consider:
1. Cut solid composite panels to fit between the rafters. These are prefabricated, lightweight panels that comprise insulation and an exterior facing in one.
2. Add bulk insulation batts between the rafters, then plaster over the lot with a second ceiling. The photos show a cathedral ceiling before, during, and after this process.
If your home has a cathedral ceiling and you are not sure how well it's insulated, it's worth finding out.

If your home has gas ducted heating through the floor, there's a quick check worth doing this weekend.
Lift the vent covers and look around the edges of the duct. As the first image shows, gaps can be surprisingly large, sometimes large enough to see straight through to the subfloor. Cold air comes up through those gaps all winter. The fix is simple: seal with foam filler rod and water-based caulk.
For decommissioned vents you no longer use, don't leave them as a cold-air entry point. Instead:
- cable tie the duct closed at the bottom
- seal any gaps between the floor boot and the floorboards
- stuff with insulation batts, as shown in the second image
- replace the original cover.
Two low-cost fixes for a warmer home.
