Back pain or sciatica doesn't always mean surgery.

Neuro and Spine Surgeon, Dr David Oehme from One Brain and Spine, recently joined ABC Melbourne to discuss spine health, what sciatica actually is, what causes it and when symptoms may require specialist attention.

In the interview, David explains why most cases of sciatica settle without surgery - and why the first step when experiencing back pain or sciatica is often not to panic.

Middle ear infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses – especially around this time of year - but they can also affect adults 👂

Knowing the signs - such as ear pain, fever, irritability, hearing loss, ear discharge/drainage or speech delay- is important to ensure that the appropriate medical care can be provided.

Treatment often depends on the severity. In some cases, your General Practitioner may suggest a 'wait and see' approach prior to prescribing antibiotics, seeing an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon, or in severe cases, surgery.

We sat down with Dr Bing Teh, ENT surgeon from VIC ENT HUB, to learn more about middle ear infections and some simple steps we can all take to help prevent them.

Earlier this month, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee was honoured to be invited to the HealthWest Cup, held at Avalon Airport Oval at Chirnside Park, home of the Werribee Football Club.

The event served as a valuable platform for local organisations, community leaders and sporting representatives to celebrate the important role that sport and community partnerships play in bringing people together and supporting the health and wellbeing of the Wyndham community.

We were delighted to have our Acting General Manager, Rachael Cassar, present the winning team with their trophy, recognising their outstanding effort and achievement on the day.

A very big thank you to Werribee Football Club CEO Mark Penaluna and his team for including St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee in this fantastic event. We value opportunities to connect with and support organisations that share our commitment to the local community, and we look forward to continuing to build strong partnerships across Wyndham.

Congratulations to the Werribee Football Club on a well-deserved victory and a wonderful achievement for the local sporting community!

Meet Peter 👋

At 80 years young, retired bricklayer Peter became the very first patient to undergo shoulder replacement surgery using the new MAKO robotic system at St Vincent's Private Hospital Melbourne.

After a fall while on holiday in Vietnam left him living with constant shoulder pain, Peter was referred to Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Austin Vo and underwent surgery at East Melbourne earlier this month.

Now, just weeks later, Peter is recovering well and looking forward to getting back to the things he loves most - gardening, walking and travelling. His next adventure? A month-long cruise to Hawaii this
September 🚢 🌴

From all of us here, a very big well done to Peter for being our first St Vincent's Private Hospital Melbourne shoulder MAKO robotic surgery patient. We wish you all the very best for your continued recovery and many more happy travels ahead 🙌
