Bringing together three established artists, The Past is Present celebrates the enduring relationship between material, memory and making. Drawing on decades of experience in contemporary metalwork, the exhibition explores how traditional craftsmanship, experimentation and shared knowledge continue to shape new forms of artistic expression.

Paul Robinson – Figurative

Spanning nearly five decades of artistic exploration, Figurative reflects Paul Robinson’s enduring fascination with the human figure. Through self-portraiture, life drawing and painting, the exhibition traces the passage of time, the experience of ageing and the evolving relationship between the artist and the human condition.

Jie Zhou – Incomplete Beauty
Joye

In Incomplete Beauty, contemporary jewellery artist Jie Zhou challenges conventional ideals of perfection through women’s lived experiences. Transforming personal stories into wearable objects, her works explore beauty, ageing, vulnerability and self-acceptance. Through silver, copper and other materials, jewellery becomes an intimate language of memory, identity and transformation.

Artist Talk | Red Gallery

Art holds a different meaning for everyone. It can be an emotional release, a moment of joy, a way to unwind, or a space to question, imagine, and make sense of the world around us.

At our recent Artist Talk, Connie Wong, Rachel Tai, and Tracy Potts shared their personal journeys and the different ways art has become part of their lives. Their stories reminded us that art doesn’t always begin with a grand idea. Sometimes, it grows from our emotions, everyday experiences, curiosity, or simply the pleasure of creating.

And perhaps that is what makes these conversations so meaningful. Through sharing our stories, we discover how differently we experience the world, while finding unexpected connections along the way.

A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful artists for their openness and generosity, and to everyone who joined us, listened, asked questions, and contributed to such a thoughtful afternoon.

Art brings us together, and conversation brings us closer.

Featuring artists: Connie Wong | Rachel Tai | Tracy Potts | Sandra McMahon

Exhibition Dates: 14–25 October 2026

Connie Wong’s Connie Wong work seeks to express what most of us find impossible to put into words. The thing we all undoubtedly feel, but don’t necessarily see. Silent Ground seeks present love as the uniting driver that connects us, and amplifies care work as a persistent labour of this love. The notion of the silent is brought to life in Wong’s expressive lines, her colours give light and warmth. Her brushstrokes are in perpetual movement as the symbolic marker of the love that keeps a community strong. The opening of Silent Ground coincided with National Carer’s Week, highlighting Wong’s personal connection and advocacy for unpaid care work. In turn we are witness to a body of work that is much like its maker- bright, fluid, and held by a persistent drive that lives below the surface.

Rachel Tai’s Rachel Tai work is borne from experimentation. With a grounding in collage, it draws connection to the ‘chance collages’ of Dada, a movement that sought to expand upon preexisting notions of fine art. Tai expands upon the layering of images, proceeding to memorialize these relationships of forms in paint. The resulting works span the spectrum of figuration and abstraction, appearing both fluid and organic, then complex, dark and geometric. In oil she

What happens when we remove the subject and allow colour, shape and form to speak for themselves?

In Contemplating Colour, Sandra McMahon explores the subtle beauty that emerges through the relationships between colour, form and space. Stripping away recognisable subjects, she allows the fundamental elements of visual language — pattern, repetition, harmony, discord, balance and texture — to take centre stage.

Guided by the philosophy of less is more, McMahon approaches each composition as a visual puzzle, carefully considering what to include and, perhaps more importantly, what to leave out.

Delicate washes of colour reveal the natural grain of the wood beneath, while subtle variations in opacity and layered forms create a quiet interplay between painting and sculpture.

Her works invite us to slow down, look closer and discover how even the simplest elements can create something unexpectedly captivating.

Tracy Potts doesn’t just question the order of things, she scoffs at it. Her statement directs a playful cynicism at the story of creationism, and with this critical eye she’s crafted creations of her own. Suspended by a myriad collection of beaded string, ribbon and ties, Tracy’s creatures surround the space, swaying gently in Potts’ newly formed universe. These creatures hold a mix of stitching, weaving, patchwork and beading, grown in stages in accordance with Tracy’s intuitive practice of artmaking. These creatures appear cheerful and eyecatching upon first glance, but the true complexity of Tracy’s work can only be fully appreciated up close, amongst layers of threads, beads and textile. Here we can draw a historical line between Pott’s intricate stitches and the weavers that came before her, creating forms that quietly held us all together for eons.

For Rachel Tai, painting begins with collage. Her practice extends beyond an exploration of colour, form and composition, becoming an ongoing investigation into visual perception and the ways we see.

Before a brush touches the canvas, Tai may experiment with hundreds of collage compositions. Fragments of imagery, colour and form are repeatedly deconstructed, rearranged and reassembled, establishing new visual relationships and finding a delicate balance between order and chance, harmony and disruption.

We are often drawn to the pursuit of something new, overlooking the possibilities that remain within the familiar.

Perhaps creativity is not always about inventing new forms, but about discovering how repetition, variation and reconsideration can transform existing elements into new visual expressions and meanings.

Tai’s paintings invite us to reconsider the act of looking, revealing unexpected connections and unexplored possibilities within familiar shapes and colours.

Love is not always expressed in words. Sometimes, it reveals itself through colour, movement, and the quiet spaces in between.

For Connie Wong, painting is a deeply personal journey shaped by four decades of artistic exploration, memories, and her experience of moving from Hong Kong to Melbourne.

At the heart of Silent Ground lies love — for nature, for the people around us, and for the moments that shape our lives.

Through vibrant colours and spontaneous gestures, Wong transforms emotions into a visual language that moves between energy and stillness, vulnerability and strength. Her paintings remind us that love is not always loud or visible. Sometimes, it lives in the quiet acts of care, the courage to endure, and our capacity to begin again.

Presented in honour of National Carers Week, Silent Ground celebrates the often unseen love and resilience of those who care for others.

An invitation to pause, to feel, and to recognise the love that quietly surrounds us.

Midsumma Festival 2027 | Group Exhibition Open Call

Red Gallery invites LGBTQIA+ artists to be part of In Full Colour, our annual Midsumma exhibition program in 2027, bringing together diverse artistic voices across all four gallery spaces (G1–G4).

Featuring both solo and group exhibitions, In Full Colour celebrates q***r creativity, bringing different perspectives, experiences and artistic practices together.

We are now welcoming artists to join our group exhibitions in G2&3, with limited spaces remaining.

Artists at all stages of their practice are encouraged to apply. We welcome all mediums, including painting, photography, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, digital art and installation.

Performance artists are also invited to propose live performances or events during the exhibition.
