We need to talk about glyphosate. 😬

It’s one of the most widely used herbicides in the world, what many people don’t realise is how it ended up in our food.

What began as a weedkiller in the 1970’s became a major part of modern farming, as GMO crops were engineered to withstand glyphosate spraying.

But here’s the part that surprises a lot of people…

Glyphosate is also sprayed on crops shortly before harvest to help them dry, making harvesting easier. 😬

This practice is known as pre harvest desiccation and it’s one of the ways glyphosate residues end up in grain based foods. Think oats, cereals, bread, grains, seeds, pasta and other everyday pantry staples.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, classified glyphosate as “carcinogenic to humans.” Alongside to***co, alcohol, asbestos and nitrates found in cured meats.

Certified organic farming prohibits the use of glyphosate and other synthetic herbicides.

And that gives us something pretty powerful as consumers - choice.

You don’t need to overhaul everything you eat overnight. Start with the foods you and your family eat most often, fruit and veg, oats, grains, seeds, flour, bread and other everyday staples.

Every swap is a choice about the food on your plate, a vote for how your food was grown and what *wasn’t* used to grow it.
