📣An Important Bird Flu Update!
You may have heard about H5 bird flu (avian influenza) in the news. H5 bird flu has now been detected in wild birds in Victoria, so it's important to know what to do if you come across a bird that appears sick or has died.
‼️Please don't pick up an unwell or dead wild bird and bring it directly into the practice.
Instead:
▪️ Avoid touching or handling the bird and keep children and pets away.
▪️ Record what you've seen and where you found it.
▪️ If safe to do so while keeping your distance, take a photo or video.
▪️ Call the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline📞 on 1800 675 888 for advice and follow their instructions.
Current Victorian guidance asks people to report clusters of five or more sick or dead wild birds of any species, as well as even one sick or dead wild seabird, waterbird, shorebird or bird of prey.
What About Your Pets❓
H5 bird flu primarily affects birds, but cats and dogs can become infected in rare cases after eating or interacting with infected animals.
To help keep your pets safe:
▪️ Don't allow them to sniff, touch or eat sick or dead wildlife.
▪️ Keep dogs on lead around wild birds.
▪️ Keep cats contained.
▪️ Prevent wild birds from accessing your pet's food and water where possible.
If your pet becomes unwell after contact with a sick or dead bird, please call us before bringing them into the practice so we can advise you on what to do next🧡

What can a vet learn just by probing a dog’s teeth? 🦷🐾
In this Behind the Curtain episode, we take a closer look at Remy’s teeth as our veterinary team checks for periodontal disease — including deep dental pockets and signs of bone loss.
While some teeth may need to be extracted, X-rays help confirm what’s happening beneath the gumline before a decision is made.
Removing diseased teeth can help reduce pain, improve comfort and prevent more serious complications.

Ep 3 - Eltham Vets - Dental Month - Path Results in 10 Minutes
Vet Nurse Vicki takes us behind the curtain to show one of the advantages of having in-house pathology at Eltham Vets. 🐾
Instead of sending samples away and waiting a day or two for results, our team can run blood tests on-site and have results in around 10 minutes.
That means our vets can quickly get a snapshot of a patient’s internal health and make informed decisions about whether they’re safe to undergo anaesthetic.
For patients like Remy, having this information quickly can make a real difference. 💙
Ep 2 - Eltham Vets - Dental Month - Behind the Curtain: Remy’s Blood Test
Before Remy’s dental procedure, Vet Nurse Vicki takes us behind the curtain to show how an in-house blood test helps our team make sure he’s safe for anaesthetic. 🐾
Vicki explains the two parts of the blood test — haematology and chemistry — and how they give our vets a better picture of Remy’s blood cells, kidney function, liver function and overall internal health.
The results are available in-house within around 10 minutes, helping our team make informed decisions before his procedure. 💙

💛This gorgeous bearded dragon was found and brought into us and we’re doing everything to ensure he’s safe, healthy and comfortable.
He’s had an X-ray🩻 as part of his veterinary assessment and one of our wonderful nurses is fostering him, giving him a warm place to receive the care he needs while we try to find out where he belongs.
