It’s Speech Pathology Week, and this year’s theme is “Communication creates possibility.”

At NeuroRehab Allied Health Network, that idea connects closely with our own focus on Creating New Possibilities Together.

Our Speech Pathologists work alongside clients, families, support people and other members of the therapy team to support individual goals across a range of areas.

Speech pathology can support speech, language and communication, as well as swallowing, mealtime management and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

For people living with neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions, these areas can play an important role in everyday participation, independence and connection with others.

This week, we’re recognising our Speech Pathology team and the knowledge, care and collaboration they bring to the NeuroRehab community.

It was great to connect with the next generation of allied health professionals at Australian Catholic University (ACU)’s Allied Health Careers Expo.

Our Chief Allied Health Officer, Angela Mucic, and Senior Occupational Therapist, Aoibheann Coughlan, spent the evening chatting with final-year Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology students about starting a career in allied health and what working with NeuroRehab Allied Health Network can look like.

We value opportunities to connect with emerging allied health professionals, share experiences from our team and answer the questions that come with preparing to take that next step from university into practice.

Movement looks different for everyone.

For people living with neurological conditions, improving strength, balance, coordination and confidence often requires an individual approach. That’s where reformer-based exercise can become a valuable part of neurological rehabilitation.

At NeuroRehab Allied Health Network, our physiotherapists may incorporate reformer-based exercise into therapy when it’s appropriate for a person’s goals, abilities and stage of rehabilitation.

Sessions are tailored to the individual and may focus on improving:

• Balance and postural control

• Strength and endurance

• Movement quality and coordination

• Functional mobility

• Confidence with everyday activities

Rather than following a one-size-fits-all program, every session is designed around what matters most to the individual and supports meaningful, goal-focused rehabilitation.

Please join us in welcoming Claire to the NeuroJunior Allied Health team.

We're delighted to welcome Claire to our Physiotherapy team, bringing more than 16 years of paediatric physiotherapy experience supporting children and young people across early childhood intervention and specialist school settings.

Claire is passionate about helping children build the skills, confidence and independence to participate in the activities that matter most to them. She believes the best outcomes come from genuine partnerships with families and takes a warm, approachable and family-centred approach to therapy.

Her clinical interests include:
✨ Gross motor development
✨ Mobility, strength and postural control
✨ Assistive technology
✨ Powered mobility for young children, supporting greater independence and opportunities to explore their world from an early age

Claire enjoys working collaboratively with families, educators and multidisciplinary teams to provide evidence-based therapy that is practical, meaningful and tailored to each child's unique strengths and goals.

Claire is now welcoming new referrals, with appointments available from our Werribee and Deer Park clinics, as well as home, school and community visits to the surrounding areas.

Stroke can happen to anyone. Knowing the signs can save a life.

We’re joining the Stroke Foundation in building awareness of the signs of stroke and the importance of acting quickly.

Remember FAST:

F – Face: Has their face drooped?
A – Arms: Can they lift both arms?
S – Speech: Is their speech slurred or difficult to understand?
T – Time: Time is critical. Call 000 immediately.

Recognising the signs of stroke is vital, and rehabilitation can also play an important role in recovery.

Many people experience changes in arm and hand function or sensation after a stroke, making everyday activities such as dressing, preparing meals, writing or using technology more challenging.

At NeuroRehab Allied Health Network, our Occupational Therapists provide Upper Limb Therapy tailored to each person’s goals.

Several members of our team have recently completed advanced training in SENSe (Study of the Effectiveness of Neurorehabilitation on Sensation), an evidence-based approach for people experiencing sensory changes following stroke.

SENSe uses structured sensory retraining techniques to support the brain’s ability to learn and adapt and may help improve sensation in the affected upper limb, including for people living with longer-term sensory changes after stroke.

Stroke recovery looks different for everyone. Personalised rehabilitation can support people to continue working towards greater independence and participation in the activities that matter most to them.
