Why Honda Civic Type R and Si Fans Are Rushing to Buy Manual Cars

For decades, driving a manual transmission wasn't something special—it was simply normal. Fast-forward to today, and the humble stick shift has become an endangered species.

As more manufacturers phase out manual transmissions in favor of automatics, CVTs, and electrified drivetrains, enthusiasts are beginning to realize that the three-pedal experience may not be around forever. That's exactly why Honda Civic Si and Type R fans are rushing to secure their manual-equipped cars while they still can.

Honda Is One of the Last Holdouts

While many performance icons have abandoned manual gearboxes—including the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Chevrolet Corvette, and several BMW M models—Honda continues to champion enthusiast driving.

The 2026 Honda Civic Si and Civic Type R remain proudly available with a six-speed manual transmission, making them two of the few mainstream performance cars still offering a true driver-focused experience.

Honda has publicly stated that both models are enthusiast-driven "halo cars," and for now, the manual transmission isn't going anywhere. But enthusiasts know better than anyone that nothing lasts forever.

More Than Just a Transmission

The appeal of the Civic Si and Type R isn't just about shifting gears yourself.

It's about connection.

Every clutch engagement, every rev-matched downshift, and every perfectly timed gear change creates an experience that modern automatics simply can't replicate. In an era where cars are becoming increasingly digital, the manual transmission remains one of the last pure forms of driver engagement.

The Value Retention Story

There's another reason enthusiasts are hanging onto these cars: they hold their value incredibly well.

A typical three-year-old vehicle can lose between 35% and 46% of its value. Yet recent market data shows the 2023 Civic Si has lost only around 3.3% of its original value, while the Civic Type R has retained an impressive amount of its MSRP as well.

For buyers, that means enjoying the car today without taking the kind of depreciation hit seen with many modern vehicles.

The Future of Manual Cars

Could simulated manual transmissions eventually fill the gap? Some manufacturers are experimenting with software-generated shifting experiences for electric vehicles, but many enthusiasts remain skeptical.

For now, nothing replaces a real clutch pedal, a manual shifter, and the satisfaction of nailing the perfect shift.

As the automotive industry moves toward automation and electrification, cars like the Civic Si and Type R have become more than performance vehicles—they've become symbols of a driving experience enthusiasts don't want to lose.

The question isn't whether manuals are becoming rare.

The question is: how much longer will they be around?

Would you buy a manual transmission car today if you knew it might be one of the last opportunities to do so? Let us know in the comments. 👇

🚨 Subaru Isn't Giving Up on Manuals Just Yet 🚨

While many manufacturers continue to phase out manual transmissions, Subaru is heading in the opposite direction. 👊⚙️

The Japanese automaker has just previewed three new models that will keep the three-pedal experience alive — proving that enthusiast cars still have a place in the future. 🏁❤️

Among the upcoming models are:

🔥 A new WRX variant featuring a proven STI-derived manual gearbox.
🔥 A lighter, more driver-focused BRZ designed around pure driving enjoyment.
🔥 An affordable manual hatchback aimed at bringing fun back to everyday driving.

At a time when manuals are becoming increasingly rare, Subaru's commitment to enthusiast-focused vehicles is refreshing to see. Rather than chasing bigger screens and more automation, they're continuing to invest in what many drivers still love most: the connection between driver, clutch, and gearbox.

While details remain limited and some models may initially be Japan-only, the message is clear:

Manual transmissions aren't dead yet. 😮‍💨

For enthusiasts, that's something worth celebrating.

If Subaru brought these models to your market, which one would you choose? The WRX, BRZ, or the affordable hatchback? 👀👇
