Doctors for the Environment Australia
Our mission is to protect health through care of the environment. Our vision is Healthy planet, healthy people Twitter @DocsEnvAus
We inform and educate the public, the medical profession and policy makers about the vital relationship between health and the environment.
Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this devastating tragedy.
At least 616 people have died and more than 1,900 people, including 41 Australians, remain missing after a massive wave of ice, mud and rock cascaded more than 170 kilometres down the Bhote Koshi River valley in Nepal.
Early analysis suggests a glacier collapse may have triggered the disaster. While the exact cause is still unclear, scientists have long warned that the Himalayan region is rapidly warming.
Global heating, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, is accelerating glacier retreat and permafrost thaw, destabilising mountain slopes and increasing the risk of landslides, debris flows and floods in the region.
Nepal contributes less than 0.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions - it is unjust that those who have contributed least to the climate crisis are now suffering the most.
Governments and fossil fuel companies have a responsibility to stop making the problem worse. For the health of people and planet, we must stop burning fossil fuels.

🌡️🌊 The world's oceans are the hottest they've ever been.
On August 22, the average global sea surface temperature hit 21.1°C - the highest temperature ever recorded.
Rising ocean temperatures have cascading impacts on the health of all life on Earth. Warmer oceans are contributing to more frequent and extreme marine heatwaves, ocean acidification, coral bleaching, algal blooms, sea level rise and extreme weather events.
We must keep pressuring our governments to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and take urgent action to protect our marine and coastal ecosystems.
“There’s no body system or organ system that isn’t potentially impacted by our accelerated climate change”
Prof Eugenie Kayak speaks about the climate crisis as a health crisis, and the need for doctors to raise their voices on this issue.

We're excited to announce that iDEA2026 will be happening October 9th and 10th, at the Melbourne Museum 🎉
The theme this year is "25 years and the next generation", so we will be acknowledging our history, but most importantly looking at how we can contribute to our planets health over the next 25 years. Our planet's health is in a grave state and as an organisation of medical doctors we need to do all we can to help.
Curated by the DEA National Students Committee, the program covers the environmental footprint of war, water stewardship, biodiversity, urban development, eco-distress and mental health, sustainability in medical education, and First Nations-led conversations on Healing Country.
Join us for two spectacular days of workshops, presentations and connection.

When Tany learned how interconnected human health is with the health of our environment, it was an “epiphany moment” that changed her perspective on the world.
After joining Doctors for the Environment Australia as a medical student, Tany is now a junior resident doctor, continuing her learning journey alongside a community of clinicians who have long championed the link between human and planetary health.
