My ‘go to’ blessing when tragedy strikes, when someone is hurt or hurting .. somewhere close or across the earth and far away.

This is a simple Metta, or loving-kindness, practice.

And no, this blessing won’t change events or provided what someone might really need, but it does allow me to pause and extend a real heart-felt wish or prayer …

May you be safe.
May you be held.
May you be protected.
May you be loved.

Today, my thoughts are with the people of Nepal, and all those affected by the tragedy unfolding there.

May they be held in our hearts.

Voicenotes from the Cushion - Part 2

Meditation isn’t magic.

It’s practice.

And there’s both ancient wisdom and modern science behind what I’m calling spaciousness of mind.

We practise noticing.
We notice we’ve wandered.
We gently return.

Again. And again. Maybe a dozen times - maybe 100!

And over time, we begin to notice that the chatter is quietening - which creates a little more space between our thoughts.

A place to pause.

And this is the place and space where creativity can happen.

Because when the mind isn’t completely occupied, all those little fragments of life have room to meet each other:
something you saw last week a conversation you had fragments of a half-read article something you heard vaguely on the radio maybe a smell, a taste, or a memory maybe, an idea you’d forgotten you had

And sometimes … these little pieces of life, find each other.

One thing connects with another, and suddenly - there’s a new idea.

Not magic.

Just a mind that has been trained (practiced) in making a little more room.

🎧 Voicenotes from the Cushion - little notes from a life of practice.

Can you feel this urge to get outside and get active?

This is the awakening that occurs with the rising yang energy of Spring .. calling us back to movement, connection and community.

I relish this shift in life - and in my practices - our meditation and Qigong practices never need not remain static, but can evolved with the seasons and with what life is asking of us.

I am excited to share two NEW offerings for Early Spring.

EXPLORING MEDITATION l
A 40-day journey to establish or deepen your meditation practice through a daily email and guided meditation (from me to you) and a weekly online gathering to practice and connect together.

Experience a range of different practices, ones that I have held close for many years, so you can find what resonates most with you!

THE WAY OF SPRING
My inaugural 5-week online gathering to garner that leap in energy, and the qualities of Spring, through Qigong inspired movements and practices, alongside breath work and meditation.

This is the first time I’m offering The Way of Spring, so I’ve kept the introductory price low (only ten participants). It’s an invitation to come and explore this new practice with me.

‘Voicenotes from the Cushion’ … a little idea that came to me after meditation this morning ✨

When I first started meditating regularly, feeling this surge of creative was one of the first delightful gifts that I noticed.

Suddenly, I felt as if I had a funnel to fresh inspiration … and this is just ONE of the benefits of meditating that we are cultivating this fertile spaciousness of mind.

It’s a sense of … more room and quietness in the mind, and therefore a little more clarity.

Which is the truly magical landscape where unexpected thoughts and creative ideas get to bubble up.

So, rather than the boring static photo of my meditation cushion, or me with my eyes closed … let me introduce …

Voicenotes from the Cushion.

Little notes from a life of practice … offering things I notice, learn, question or discover along the way - that feel worth sharing.

No timetable.

With Spring now just a week away, I was thinking about these words on my beach walk this morning.

If you follow, you’ll see that I love taking photos on my morning walks and sharing them here. It really is my happy place … and the constantly changing landscape of the beach keeps me well grounded in the seasons.

This quote from Mary Oliver is one that I have shared before .. because it IS inspirational.

Pay attention.
Look closely at the world around you. The sandstone, and the changing sand line. The friendly interaction between dogs on the trail, and saying ‘hi’ to someone you pass.

Be astonished.
Notice the magic in the everyday … I love listening to the sound of the water lapping the shore, the taste of the salty sea air, and YES the warm Spring breeze that I can feel on my skin. And, the way it all changes every single day.

Tell about it.
Sometimes I wonder if sharing my daily beach photos is a little bit of over-sharing.

But it brings me so much joy to notice these things, to photograph them, to share them … and to keep them on my page as a reminder of this beautiful world around me.

And, I think I’m at that age in life when speaking and writing about what I love and what I’m passionate about … is just going to keep on happening!

What about you?

I had the intention to show up every day on Instagram for 40 days … to share how I was weaving a new practice … combining my 30+ years of meditation with daily Qigong.

I didn’t get even close to showing up for 40 days!

I’m admitting it.

My intention was heartfelt and I enjoyed recording some of my practice and receiving such lovely feedback and comments. Yet, I learned pretty early that it was the showing up on social media, daily, that was the hardest part.

But nevertheless, something rather wonderful still unfolded along the way … as I trusted it would.

I did weave a beautiful new practice.

And truly, that was the more important experiment all along.

I have shared my thoughts (finally) over on my BLOG.

What if one word could gently shape your day? 💙

This month inside The Quiet Pause, our Loving Kindness Meditation has been quietly unfolding through a series of weekly reflections, stories and simple practices to take meditation into everyday life.

This week ( #4) going -mout Sunday 6am - we’re exploring a tangible way to carry a quality of the heart with us.

Years ago, while teaching a month of heart-based practices, I wanted to create something simple that people could take away from the meditation cushion and carry into everyday life.

That little idea became my Heartfulness Cards - a deck of 108 single word cards, each offering a quality of the heart to contemplate.

Kindness.
Patience.
Courage.
Trust.
Forgiveness.
Gratitude.

Yes .. I love this 🙏🏼 from the inspirational teacher Thích Nhất Hạnh

Meditation isn’t about escaping from our lives or trying to make everything quiet and perfect.

Meditation is a way of learning to meet what is here - with a little more awareness.

A little more kindness.
And .. a little more breathing space.
Yes, that is why we practice.
🤍

I know it can feel like meditation isn’t ‘doing’ very much while you’re sitting there!

We sit. We breathe. We notice. We return.

But with regular practice, we may begin to notice the effects elsewhere.

Perhaps being a little more able to focus on what we’re doing. or noticing our reactions before they carry us away.

Perhaps there’s a little more clarity, creativity or connection in daily life.

And sometimes the changes can be even quieter … the sense of a little more space, and awareness and presence.

A little more ability to be where we actually are.

This is why I return to my daily meditation, for the inner peace and calm, and as my antidote for stress and overwhelm .. plus all of the above.

The practice happens on the cushion.
The benefits show up in life.

Save this as a reminder of why your practice is worth returning to. 🤍
