You don’t need perfect pitch to develop a great musical ear.
Professional musicians train using **relative pitch**—learning to recognise each note by its relationship to the tonic, or number 1.
In this simple piano exercise, you’ll hear how numbers 2, 3 and 4 each have their own musical flavour. By consciously connecting the number with its sound, you can gradually learn to hear a note before you play it.
That is when improvisation stops being guesswork—and starts becoming a musical conversation. 🎵
For more practical lessons that make music easier to understand, you can find the Mat Creedon School of Music on Skool or through my page.
Do you struggle with timing at the piano?
Try stepping away from your usual way of practising and think like a drummer instead. 🥁🎹
Reduce your song to just two notes—the key note in each hand, played one octave apart. Then play only the original rhythms of the song.
By temporarily removing the melody and chords, your brain can concentrate entirely on timing, coordination and groove.
Once the rhythm feels natural in your body, return to the correct notes. You may be surprised by how much easier the original piece feels.
Sometimes we don’t need to count harder. We simply need the drummer inside us to teach the pianist how to move.

Nearly two million people watched my Easy Key video—and it showed me just how many people want to understand music without feeling overwhelmed by it.
Now I want to hear from you.
What is standing between you and the musician you want to become?
It could be music theory, technique, confidence, performing, songwriting, earning an income from music or finding a deeper spiritual connection through sound.
Whatever it is, tell me in the comments. There is no need to feel embarrassed, and no struggle is too small.
Your answers will help shape the lessons and videos I create next, so I can help with what musicians genuinely need.

What do you need to move forward today?
Sankalpa | The Power of Intention blends psychedelic sitar, driving electronic beats, Indian percussion and atmospheric drones to create music that keeps you chilled, focused and moving.
Take it on a run, play it while you work, clean the house, practise yoga or use it to enter a state of single-focused contemplation.
Where does this music take you?

Today, I offer these sounds in honour of our brothers and sisters in Nepal.
For those who have lost their lives, for the families who are grieving, and for everyone affected by the devastating floods—may we hold them in our hearts.
Please spend these next two and a half minutes with me in quiet meditation. Send your prayers, love and blessings to all those facing unimaginable loss and hardship.
May they feel the compassion of people around the world. 🇳🇵❤️
So many musicians postpone their happiness until they feel “good enough.”
But there will always be another song to learn, another skill to develop and another milestone waiting ahead.
Music is not a test of your worth. The joy is already present in the playing.
Life is short. Play the music—and enjoy the ride while it lasts. 🎶
If you’d like to continue learning with me, you can find the Mat Creedon School of Music through my profile.
You asked if there was a premade version of the Easy Key—so I went back to the drawing board and created the Easy Key Mini. 🎹
It’s smaller, sturdier and magnetic, allowing it to sit comfortably above the piano keys without getting in the way—even when you’re playing fast runs or big chord voicings.
It comes in two versions:
🎵 Alphabetical—to help you identify the notes
🔢 Numbered—to help you understand the patterns and relationships within music
The magnetic design also allows the teaching system to grow as I create new tools in the future. And when you’re not using it, it makes a rather cool bookmark or fridge magnet!
You can find the premade Easy Key Mini on my website.
If you prefer the original Classic Easy Key and a simple DIY project, you can also find the downloadable version in my Gumroad shop.
Social media can inspire us—but it can also make us forget why we began playing music.
The moment inspiration turns into comparison, music becomes an impossible competition. We begin trying to prove our worth instead of creating, connecting and enjoying the sound.
Today, put down the phone, pick up your instrument and play something that brings you happiness.
You don’t need to be better than anyone else. Your music may be exactly what helps another person feel less alone. 🎵❤️

His hands shook so badly that he could barely play.
Nobody laughed. Nobody even seemed to notice—but he noticed.
For years, he believed his body had betrayed him. Then he realised his trembling hands were not the enemy. They were frightened and trying to protect him.
Sometimes courage is not performing without fear.
Sometimes courage is taking a breath and saying:
“You’re allowed to shake. We’re going to play anyway.”
You can find the full lesson, including practical ways to work through shaking, overwhelm and performance anxiety, inside the Mat Creedon School of Music. Search for:
