Everyone pictures one Viking ship. There were five.

The Norse did not build a boat. They built a fleet, each hull for a different job.

Longship, the drakkar: the raider, long and lean, built for speed and terror.

Snekkja: the fast warship, light enough to slip up a shallow river.

Knarr: the deep-bellied trader that hauled cargo to Greenland and beyond.

Karvi: the small coastal all-rounder for short trips and small crews.

Byrding: the short-haul workhorse that fed the towns.

One people. Five designs. A thousand miles of open water.

If you had to cross the North Atlantic, which ship do you climb into?
