ACCESS Training: Empowering Special Students & Families

This week, the American Samoa Department of Health – Maternal & Child Health Program is proud to highlight our continued partnership with Intersections, Inc., SPED, and the Leo O Aiga Family-to-Family Information Center through the ACCESS Project — Advocating Consent, Confidence and Education for Special Students.

This important initiative brings together educators, families, caregivers, and public health partners to help children and youth with special healthcare and accessibility needs build the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe, confident, and empowered.

Through ACCESS training, families and students are learning about:

🔹 Healthy relationships and personal boundaries
🔹 Personal safety and recognizing unsafe situations
🔹 Understanding consent and communicating confidently
🔹 Recognizing, resisting, and reporting coercion or exploitation
🔹 Making healthy and responsible decisions
🔹 Strengthening communication between youth, caregivers, and trusted adults

The ACCESS Project uses the Sexuality for All Abilities (SFAA) curriculum and focuses on education that is medically accurate, age-appropriate, culturally responsive, and accessible for students with documented accessibility needs.

Most importantly, ACCESS recognizes that families are essential partners. Caregiver education helps reinforce these important conversations at home and strengthens the support network surrounding each child.

💙 Together, we are creating safer pathways for our children and youth — ensuring every student has the confidence, knowledge, and support to advocate for themselves.

A special fa'afetai tele lava to Intersections, Inc., our SPED partners, the Leo O Aiga Family-to-Family Information Center, educators, caregivers, and families for your commitment to empowering our special students!
